As a resident of Prague without my own car, I have to rely on public transport in the vast majority of cases, and having timetables at hand on my phone is a necessity for me. That's why I've been using IDOS (formerly Connections) since its debut in the App Store. The application has changed considerably since its first version, functions have gradually been added, and IDOS has become a full-fledged client for the web interface with the vast majority of the functions it offers.

However, the developer Petr Jankuj wanted to simplify the application for a long time so that, rather than a full-fledged version of IDOS, it would serve as the fastest possible way to find relevant information about the nearest connection, which is ultimately what we need most often on the iPhone. The new version of iOS 7 was a great opportunity for this, and IDOS 4 goes hand in hand with the new design language of Apple's operating system.

We will notice the simplification already on the initial screen. The previous version consisted of several separate tabs, now we have only one screen around which everything revolves. Functions from the tabs are available directly from the main page - in the upper part you can switch between searching for connections, departures from a stop or the timetable of a specific line. Bookmarks appear by swiping to the right, and all the settings, which are also very truncated, have been hidden in the system settings.

A visible novelty is the map at the bottom, which displays the nearest stops around your location. Each pin represents a stop, as IDOS also knows the exact GPS coordinates of stops in many Czech cities. Click on a stop to select it in the field From where. Thanks to this, you will no longer need to find out the name of the nearest stop and at the same time you can see other nearby stops, which in turn will make it easier to decide in which direction to go to the stop and any related searches on maps.

In addition, by holding your finger on the map, it can be enlarged to full screen and navigated similarly to the dedicated Maps application. Pins with stops will also be displayed here, however, from this screen, a stop can be marked not only as a start station, but also as a destination station, if you are guiding someone else to an event location.

Stops From where, Where and possibly Over (must be turned on in the settings), however, it is of course possible to search classically. The application whispers stops after the first letters are written. Previously present favorite stations have disappeared, instead the application offers the most frequently used stops after opening the search window. In fact, it selects your favorite stations for you. So you don't have to think about which stations you want to save as favorites, IDOS will display them in dynamic order. Of course, it is also possible to select the current position and let the application select a station based on your location. A menu is then available for a more detailed search Advanced, where you can choose, for example, connections without transfers or means of transport.

You select timetables from the menu that appears after clicking on the top bar with the name of the timetable. IDOS can filter out the most recently used timetables for quick switching, for a complete overview you need to switch the list to All. The option to buy an SMS ticket according to the selected order has also been hidden in this offer.

The list of found connections is significantly clearer than ever before. It will offer a complete overview of transfers for each connection, without the need to open the details of the connection. It will show not only the individual lines, but also the travel time and the waiting time between transfers. The map in the upper part will then display the starting and destination stations. From this screen it is also possible to add a connection to bookmarks or send the entire statement (ie not just individual connections) by e-mail.

Since the listing already offers the most important information, the connection detail has turned into a kind of itinerary, where instead of a boring overview of individual transfers, it lists instructions, similar to a navigation application. These may sound, for example: "Get off, walk approximately 100 m, wait 2 minutes for Tram 22 and drive 6 minutes to the Národní třída stop." It also adds an overview of all the stations you will pass through without having to click on anything. However, by tapping on any part, you will open an overview of all stations for that connection.

show on the map, which is especially useful for transfers, where individual stations can be hundreds of meters apart, and you don't have to get lost and worry that the connecting train will leave before you find the stop. In the same way, the connection can be saved in the calendar including a notification or sent via SMS.

Unfortunately, some information is missing here for trains and buses, for example platform numbers, but the question is whether they are even available through the API. Another temporary shortcoming is the absence of search history, which was available in the previous version, but should appear in a future update.

As already mentioned at the beginning, IDOS also allows you to search for the departures of all lines from a specific stop, which is a great substitute for searching in the physical timetables at the stop. Since the current position can be entered into the search instead of entering the name of the stop, you will find relevant information faster than if you had to take a few steps on the platform. Finally, there is also the option of searching for the route of the lines.

IDOS 4 is a big step forward, mainly in terms of ease of use and intuitive user interface. Although the application looks significantly simplified, in reality it lost only a few functions that nobody used very much. The new version is not a free update, but a new standalone app, which we see quite often with iOS 7 software. Anyway, the fourth version of IDOS is really a completely new application rewritten from the ground up with a completely new user interface, not just a slight graphical change.

If you travel by public transport, train or bus often, the new IDOS is practically a must. You can find several alternatives in the App Store, but Petr Jankuja's application is unsurpassed in terms of functions and appearance. It is currently only available for iPhone, however, an iPad version should be added in time as part of an update.
