Honestly, we all have a secret. Something we don't want other people around us to know or see. Either for personal or work reasons. Perhaps you are familiar with a situation where someone accidentally found a file, be it a document or a photograph, and there was a fire on the roof. The Hider 2 application for Mac will not speak to your morals or clear your conscience, but it will help you hide data that should not fall into the wrong hands.

Hider 2 can do one thing and it can do it well – hide files and encrypt them so that access to them is only possible with a chosen password. The application itself is quite simple. In the left column you will find navigation between individual groups of files, and in the remaining space there is a list of your hidden files. Hider works on a fairly simple principle. Drag & drop the files you want to hide from the Finder. At that point, it disappears from the Finder, and the file can only be found in the Hider.

What happens in the background is that the file is copied into Hideru's own library and then deleted from its original location. It is thus impossible to retrieve the original file without a password, as Hider also takes care of safe deletion, not just deletion equivalent to emptying the Recycle Bin. When you want to work with a given file, use the toggle button to reveal it in Hider, which will make it appear in its original location. The application cleverly helps to find it in the file system with the "Reveal in Finder" menu. While smaller files such as photos or documents are hidden and unhide almost instantly, you have to take into account that this involves copying files and for example, you will have to wait a while for large videos.

The organization of the files itself is also not at all complicated. Files and folders are automatically sorted into folders All Files, however, it is possible to create your own groups and sort files into them. With a large number of files, the search option also comes in handy. Hider also supports labels from OS X 10.9, but it is not possible to edit them in the application. The only way to work with labels is to reveal the file, assign or change the label in the Finder, and then hide the file again. Likewise, it is not possible to view files in the application, there is no preview option. In addition to files, the app can also store notes in a simple built-in text editor, similar to what 1Password can do.

While Hider places files from your computer in a single library, the same is true for external drives. For each connected external storage, Hider creates its own group in the left panel, which has a separate library located on the external disk. When you reconnect, the hidden files will then appear in the menu in the application, from where you can uncover them again. Otherwise, encrypted files from an external library cannot even be retrieved. Although the library can be unzipped to reveal individual folders and files within it, they are in an encrypted format protected by strong AES-256 encryption.

To increase security, the application locks itself after a certain interval (default is 5 minutes), so there is no risk of someone getting access to your secret files after you accidentally leave the application open. After unlocking, a simple widget is also available in the top bar, which will allow you to quickly reveal the most recently hidden files.

Hider 2 is an incredibly simple and intuitive app for hiding files that should remain secret, whether it's important contracts or sensitive photos of your significant other. It does its job well without making high demands on the user's computer literacy, and it looks good. Just set a password and drag and drop folders and files, that's the magic of the whole application, which can be called without hesitation 1Password for user data. You can find Hider 2 in the App Store for €17,99.
