It's been a while since we last looked at a Swissten product review in our magazine. But it is definitely not that we have already reviewed all available products. On the contrary, they are constantly increasing on the Swissten.eu online store, and we will have a lot to do in the coming weeks to introduce you to all of them. The first product we will look at after a long hiatus are the brand new Swissten Stonebuds wireless TWS headphones, which will surprise you with their functionality and simple operation. So let's get straight to the point.

Official specification

As already mentioned in the title and in the opening paragraph, Swissten Stonebuds are TWS wireless headphones. The abbreviation TWS in this case stands for True-Wireless. Some manufacturers refer to wireless headphones as headphones that connect via Bluetooth, but are connected to each other by a cable. In this case, the label "wireless" is slightly off - that's exactly why the abbreviation TWS, i.e. "truly wireless" headphones, was created. The good news is that the Swissten Stonebuds offer the latest version of Bluetooth, namely 5.0. Thanks to this, you can move away from the headphones up to 10 meters without feeling any change in the sound. The size of the battery in both headphones is 45 mAh, the case can provide another 300 mAh. The headphones can play for up to 2,5 hours on a single charge, with the microUSB cable charging them in 2 hours. Swissten Stonebuds support A2DP, AVRCP v1.5, HFP v1.6 and HSP v1.2 profiles. The frequency range is classically 20 Hz - 20 kHz, sensitivity 105 dB and impedance 16 ohms.

Packing

The Swissten Stonebuds headphones are packed in a classic box that is typical for Swissten. The color of the box is therefore mainly white, but there are also red elements. On the front side there is a picture of the headphones themselves, and below them are the basic features. On one of the sides you will then find the complete official specifications that we have already mentioned in the paragraph above. On the back you will find a manual in several different languages. Swissten has a habit of printing these instructions on the box itself, so that there is no unnecessary waste of paper and burden on the planet, which could otherwise be noticeable with thousands of pieces. After opening the box, just pull out the plastic carrying case, which already contains the case with the headphones inside. Below you will find a short charging microUSB cable and there are also two spare plugs of different sizes. In addition, you will also find a small piece of paper in the package that describes the headphones as such, along with the pairing instructions.

Processing

As soon as you take the reviewed headphones in your hand, you will be surprised by their lightness. It might seem that the headphones are poorly made due to their weight, but the opposite is true. The surface of the headphone case is made of black matte plastic with a special treatment. If you somehow manage to scratch the case, just run your finger over the scratch a few times and it will disappear. On the lid of the case there is the Swissten logo, on the bottom you will find specifications and various certificates. After opening the lid, all you have to do is simply pull the headphones out. Swissten Stonebuds headphones are made of the same material as the case itself, so everything matches perfectly. After removing the earphones, you must remove the transparent film that protects the charging contact points inside the case. The headphones are charged classically using two gold-plated connectors, i.e. the same as in the case of other cheaper TWS headphones. There is then a rubber "fin" on the body of the headphones, which has the task of keeping the headphones in the ears better. Of course, you can already exchange the plugs for larger or smaller ones.

Personal experience

I used the headphones under review instead of AirPods for about a work week. During that week, I realized several things. In general, I know about myself that I completely wear earplugs in my ears - that's exactly why I have classic AirPods and not AirPods Pro. So, as soon as I put the headphones in my ears for the first time, I was of course not completely comfortable. So I decided to "bite the bullet" and persevere. In addition, the first few hours of wearing the headphones hurt my ears a little, so I always had to take them out for a few minutes to rest. But on the third day or so, I kind of got used to it and found out that the earplugs in the finale are not bad at all. Even in this case, it's all about habit. So if you've been thinking about switching from ear buds to plug-in headphones, go ahead - I believe that most users won't have a problem with it after a while. If you choose the correct earbud size, the Swissten Stonebuds also passively suppress ambient noise very well. Personally, I have one ear smaller than the other, so I know I have to use earplug sizes accordingly. It is not written anywhere that you have to use the same plugs for both ears. If you also have some favorite plugs from old headphones, you can of course use them.

As for the stated duration of the earphones, i.e. 2,5 hours per charge, in this case I allow myself to slightly adjust the time. You will get about two and a half hours of battery life if you listen to music really quietly. If you start listening a little louder, i.e. a little above the average volume, the endurance decreases, to about an hour and a half. However, you can alternate the headphones in your ears, meaning that you will only use one, the other will be charged, and you will only change them after discharge. I must also praise the control of the headphones, which is not classically "button", but only touch. To start or pause playback, just tap the earpiece with your finger, if you double-tap the left earpiece, the previous song will be played, if you double-tap the right earpiece, the next song will be played. The tap control works really perfectly and I definitely have to commend Swissten for this option, as they do not offer similar controls in a handset in the same price range.

Sound

As I mentioned above, I primarily use second-generation AirPods for listening to music and calls. So I'm used to a certain sound quality and quite frankly, the Swissten Stonebuds quite logically play a bit worse. But you can't expect that five times cheaper headphones will play the same, or better. But I definitely don't want to say that the sound performance is bad, not even by chance. I had the opportunity to try several similar TWS headphones in the same price range and I must say that Stonebuds are among the better ones. I tested the sound while playing songs from Spotify, and I would sum it up simply – it won't offend you, but it won't blow you away either. The bass and treble are not very pronounced and the sound is generally kept mainly in the midrange. But the Swissten Stonebuds play well in that, there's no denying that. As for the volume, the distortion only occurs in about the last three levels, which is already a loud enough volume that could damage the hearing during long-term listening.
