It's almost a month since I bought my Apple iPad. I promised you that I would share my experience and so I bring you an iPad review from my point of view. Is it worth buying an Apple iPad or is it useless?

Package contents

Apple iPad packaging is typically minimalist, as we are used to. Don't expect any thick instructions, this time we will find an instruction in the form of a leaflet, which presents several steps - download iTunes, connect iPad to iTunes and register. Nothing more, Apple relies on the fact that everyone can learn to work with the iPad even without instructions.

In addition to the "leaflet" with instructions, we also find a charger and a USB cable. Some people will be upset that the package lacks headphones, while others may complain about the lack of a cloth for wiping the screen. I don't mind the missing headphones that much, I use the ones from the iPhone, but a cleaning cloth wouldn't hurt.

First iPad sync with iTunes

You can't work with your iPad until it syncs with iTunes for the first time. iTunes will ask you to register your device. There was a small problem here, iTunes didn't want to register my iPad, but I ended up doing the registration through the web and I postponed the registration directly in iTunes until later.

After that I could already choose what I wanted to upload to iTunes. Some iPhone applications are uploaded to the Appstore in so-called "universal binaries", so you only need one application that is created for both the iPhone screen and the larger iPad screen. Some developers, on the other hand, prefer a separate application for each device. For free apps, this may be a better solution, but if this solution is applied to paid apps, then you have to pay for the iPad app again.

It should be noted that until the iPad is officially sold in the Czech Republic, the Czech App Store accounts do not fully support the iPad. Although you can sometimes buy an iPad application (if you can search for it directly in iTunes), firstly, not all of them are in the CZ store, and secondly, it is not entirely convenient. If you want to access the Appstore from an iPad, you can only do so with a US account (more countries will be added gradually). I recommend using, for example, my instructions to set up a US account"How to create an iTunes (Appstore) US account for free".

Design and weight

It is not necessary to dwell here on the design of the Apple iPad as such, everyone has already made their own image. But I can say that in reality the iPad looks even better than I imagined. As for the weight, some will be surprised that the iPad is light, while others will tell you that it is heavier than they imagined. But you definitely won't be able to hold the iPad in your hand for a long time, and you'll need to lean it on something for longer use.

But I have to dwell on the quality of the display, where you will soon recognize the quality of the IPS panel. The colors of the display will simply captivate you. Everything looks sharp and full of color. I tested the iPad in direct sunlight, and if you're working in one of the apps, it's not so bad at full brightness. But as soon as you watch a darker film, you have to go outside of direct light, because at this point the film becomes unwatchable and you can only use the iPad as a mirror.

iPad speed

After the IPS display, another feature of the iPad will soon excite you. The Apple iPad is incredibly fast. I remember when I still admired the speed of the iPhone 3GS after switching from the 3G version and I experience the same feeling with the iPad. For example, Plants vs Zombies takes about 3 seconds to start on my iPhone 12GS. But it only takes 7 seconds to start on the iPad, with the fact that even the HD version starts on the iPad. Excellent, right?

Native app on iPad

After launch, the iPad contains several basic applications, as we are used to from the iPhone. In particular, we can find the Safari, Mail, iPod, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Maps, Photos, Videos, YouTube and, of course, the iTunes and App Store settings and applications. So let's take a look at some of them.

Safari – You could say that it is just a scaled-up Internet browser from the iPhone. But that doesn't mean something is wrong! Safari is an excellent browser, and its simplicity only benefits it on a device like this. The only problem I have is that if I open several pages or a page with high memory requirements, it sometimes happens that Safari simply crashes. Hopefully Apple will debug this in one of the future firmwares. Also, don't expect Adobe Flash to run in Safari.

Kalendář – a large diary with upcoming events is priceless. If you like to organize your time, then you will like the basic application. Again, simplicity prevails here, but the calendar looks great and is a joy to work with. No important view is missing, so you can look at the daily, weekly or monthly schedule, but also take a look at upcoming events in the list. Perhaps only the taskmaster would stand out here, maybe sometime in the future.

Maps – iPad still uses Google Maps services, so nothing special that you are not used to. Again, I have to highlight the iPad display, on which the maps look great. Trips can be planned perfectly on such a large display.

YouTube – YouTube for iPad makes beautiful use of enlarged screens, so you often get caught up in just scrolling through YouTube videos, reading comments and the like. The Top Rated and Most Viewed tabs will support you in this. I didn't spend much time on YouTube on the iPhone, but it's definitely different with the iPad. When watching HD videos, you will again appreciate the quality of the display. In lower quality, it is no longer such a glory, because you soon get used to the quality of HD videos and then it is difficult to get used to something worse. You can watch widescreen videos either in their original form or stretch them (and thus crop the edges) across the entire screen.

Photos – What could be special about viewing photos on an iPad (no, I'm not really going to raise the iPad's display to the heavens again, although I could). Although you already know multitouch gestures from the iPhone, you will find some others in the iPad. Although it has no practical meaning, just playing with the photos will probably last you some time. Take a look at the video and judge for yourself!

Email – The client for managing e-mails in iPad uses the left column in landscape mode to display a list of the latest e-mails, while you can view e-mails in the wider right column. Gmail also created a similar interface in its web application for the iPad. You will definitely love this change, working with emails is much better after that.

Typing on the iPad

Typing speed on the touch screen was a big question before I bought the iPad. I'm fine typing on the touch screen on the iPhone, but how will it look with the large keyboard on the iPad? Anyway, it's different than typing on a classic physical keyboard. When typing, you have to constantly look at the keyboard, it will be difficult to write from memory.

However, I would definitely not want to write long texts on the iPad. The touch screen is great for short replies in emails, writing notes or managing a to-do list, but the iPad is not suitable for writing long texts. On the other hand, typing on the iPad isn't as slow as I'd expect. I found a 4 finger typing system and it works for me. I write short answers in a few sentences relatively quickly, so I bring my iPad with me to conferences to take notes.

It might also surprise someone that the iPad does not yet support Czech. First of all, the system is not in Czech, which many of you would certainly expect, but for now you won't even find a Czech keyboard, so you only have to type in "Czech".

iBooks and reading on the iPad

After entering the App Store, you can download the iBooks application, which is an ebook reader directly from Apple. Along with it, you will download the beautiful book Teddy Bear. The animations of flipping through the book will excite you. Personally, I'm used to reading from the iPhone display, so reading on the iPad doesn't cause me any problems, but probably not everyone is comfortable reading from an active display and will prefer a solution like Kindle or classic books.

What I like is the ability to easily buy a book from the iBook Store. As easy as buying apps in the App Store, you can also buy books. Unfortunately, the iBook Store is not currently planned for the Czech Republic, so you will have to make do with creating a US account and reading English books.

I also like the fact that even when the iPhone is in a vertical position, ebooks don't start right from the edge. iBooks has created fairly wide margins, which will make reading on the iPad much easier. In landscape mode, it displays exactly two pages as if you were reading a book. You will certainly welcome the Orientation Lock button, which locks the iPad in the given position, so that the iPad screen does not flip over while reading on its side.

For example, some PDF readers in the App Store try to use the entire desktop, and that is definitely a mistake. The document then becomes much more difficult to read. The biggest problem occurs when you have your iPad wide and the application formats your text across the entire screen. At this point, the document becomes unreadable for me because it is very uncomfortable to read. Fortunately, many developers are aware of this and thus always solve this "problem" in some way.

Battery life

When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad, he said that the iPad would last 10 hours of video playback. Some laughed because they expected this to be the classic theoretical maximum endurance when reading a book, but many people did not believe that this was real endurance.

I can confirm that my iPad actually lasts more than 10 hours with constant surfing, watching videos and playing with apps! Unbelievable, right? When just reading books, according to other reviewers, we get about 11-12 hours, on the other hand, when playing games intensively, the endurance drops to somewhere between 9 and 10 hours. The iPad 3G can last for around 3 hours when using a 9G network.

Using the iPad

I thought about the use of the iPad many times before buying it and tried to justify the purchase of this expensive gadget to myself. I don't know if the investment will pay off or not, in most cases I could still use a laptop, but it wouldn't be as convenient. So what do I primarily use the iPad for?

Surfing on the couch or in bed – I hate it when my laptop heats up my legs. The laptop also partially limits your movement, so you tend to adapt to the laptop. You won't solve this problem with the iPad. The iPad is an ideal device for the TV table, where anyone can borrow it at any time and go and try something on the Internet. Switching on is immediate and thus the iPad becomes a pleasant companion.

Notepad – an ideal tool for meetings or conferences. I write notes in Evernote, for example, so what I write on the iPad is then synchronized on the website or desktop. The iPad is not suitable for writing long texts, but it is excellent for taking notes.

Reading books – although I haven't used the iPad that much for reading books yet, it wouldn't be because the iPad isn't suitable for that, but rather because I don't have that much time. But I find reading on the iPad excellent.

Playing games – I'm not exactly a typical gamer who spends many hours a week (or even a day) playing games. But I liked playing minigames on the iPhone while traveling by tram. And with the iPad, I enjoy playing games such as Plants vs Zombies or Worms HD. The big screen gives these games new possibilities and you can play a lot of interesting games in the comfort of your bed or couch.

Reading the news – for the time being, you will only find foreign applications for reading news on the iPad in the App Store (and so you are more likely to use the website to read Czech news), but if you also like to read foreign news, you will find several interesting applications in the App Store. Everyone uses the larger iPad screen a little differently, and I'm curious to see where this will go. For now, I'm still waiting for a suitable RSS reader, but I'll definitely use the iPad RSS feed as well.

Social networks – I'm used to reading, for example, Twitter in bed before going to sleep, and that's even more convenient now with the iPad. But I wouldn't want to write with anyone for a long time via Instant Messaging on the iPad. The iPad is ideal for short conversations, but I wouldn't want to type on the touch keyboard for a long time.

Productivity – I've had the Things task manager on my iPad since day one. While I always used my iPhone more for capturing new tasks, I used the Mac application for sorting tasks. But now I often prefer to manage my tasks on the iPad. The only thing I'm missing is direct sync between iPad and iPhone, but that's a Things app-only problem and will surely be fixed soon.

Mind maps and presentations – I found an ideal tool for creating mind maps on the iPad called MindNode, which has both an iPad, iPhone and Mac version. Thus, the iPad became the ideal tool for me to sort my thoughts. I enjoy touch and feel more creative with the iPad and its touch. I then try to express these ideas, for example, in the form of a presentation, where the iWork package should serve, but more on that another time.

Watching a movie on the go – the iPad screen is not only of high quality, but also large enough to make watching a movie or series enjoyable. The iPad can be used, for example, even on a flight to America, when the flight takes a really long time - the iPad's battery can handle it without any problem!

Digital frame - ok, I don't use the iPad like this yet, but someone might like this feature :)

As you can see, as a result, the iPad has nothing that cannot be replaced by a laptop. So is it even worth it? Certainly! The convenience at work is worth it, instant switching on is priceless and you will appreciate the long endurance, for example, at conferences without the possibility of connecting the laptop to the network.

Cons

Of course, the Apple iPad also has a few flaws. Let's start in order:

Missing Flash – we should probably ask if this is really such a disadvantage or if it is rather not the evolution of the modern web. Flash is gradually being replaced on major websites by HTML5, in which many people see the future. There will be no need to have any additional plugin, but only a modern secure internet browser. The load on the processor is much lower and the browser is much more stable. Perhaps temporarily, one can talk about the lack of Flash support as a minus.

Camera – so I would definitely welcome it here on the iPad. I wrote that I don't enjoy long-term typing with someone via the touch keyboard on the iPad. But that could be solved easily by supporting video chat. Apple wants to hide something for the next generation, I'm not looking for more.

multitasking – I don't particularly need multitasking on the iPhone, but I would really welcome it on the iPad. For example, I would like to have a running Instant Messaging program like Skype turned on. But this is only a temporary minus, because these problems will be solved by iPhone OS 4. Unfortunately, we will not see iPhone OS 4 for iPad until the fall of this year.

Without USB connector – iPad again uses a classic Apple dock cable and not a standard USB cable. I personally don't particularly need it, but someone would certainly like to connect an external keyboard to the iPad, for example. This problem can be partially solved using the so-called Camera kit, but more on that in another article.

Non-existent multiple account management – so I would see this as the biggest weakness of the current iPad. The device will probably be used by several people in the household, so it would not be bad at all if it were possible to create multiple profiles for individual members of the household. Let everyone have their notes with them, so you don't have to worry about your child's important work documents being deleted.

It attracts attention – some might like it, some will definitely hate it. The Apple iPad is not exactly a typical device in our area, so expect that whenever you pull out the iPad, it will attract attention. It wouldn't matter so much when reading books or watching a movie, but don't count on the fact that, for example, writing tasks or events on the calendar in public transport would be pleasant if three other people are looking over your shoulder.

Which model to buy?

Do you like the Apple iPad despite these flaws, but you can't decide which model to buy? I personally bought an Apple iPad 16GB WiFi. For what reason? I don't use the iPad as a portable library of music and movies, so I simply wouldn't take up more space. iPad apps and games still aren't so big that I need more space. In addition to applications, I also carry a few video podcasts, movies and a few episodes of series on the iPad, but I certainly don't use the iPad as a storage for movies. So it really depends on how you plan to use the device.

If you plan to watch movies on your iPad at home, even 16GB might be too much for you. There is an Air Video application (in the App Store for a few crowns) that streams video in perfect quality from your computer to your iPad. I will definitely mention this app in one of the reviews.

WiFi or 3G model? That depends on you. It is often enough to download content to the iPad in a place where WiFi is available and then consume this content on public transport. There is no need to be on the Internet all the time. And what are we talking about, you will still use the iPad mostly at home or on long trips where there is no high-quality 3G network and you will have to rely on the slower Edge or GPRS. And do you really want to pay more internet tariffs?

Buy an iPad case?

This isn't exactly a traditional paragraph for an Apple iPad review, but I decided to mention it here. I'm not going to discuss here whether it is necessary to protect the iPad or not, but I will look at the cover from a slightly different point of view.

Some cases are not only used to protect the iPad, but you can also partially position it. I have to say that just putting the iPad on your feet and then writing is not very pleasant, so it is advisable to have some inclination. This is exactly what some cases are used for (such as the original Apple case), when you can tilt the iPad a little using this case. Writing is then much more pleasant and accurate. I personally bought the cover in the Czech iStyle from Macally.

The neighborhood's reaction to the iPad

A lot of people had my iPad in their hands (although not as many as Petr Mára's iPad), so I tested people's reactions to it. Someone would like to buy it for their children, someone likes it as a device for presentations, everyone mostly found some use for it. But everyone really liked the Apple iPad. Although some were very skeptical of the iPad at first, they changed their minds after a few minutes with the iPad in hand. Surprisingly, even iPhone detractors liked the iPad.

Verdict

So is the Apple iPad worth buying or not? I'll leave that up to you. For example, re-read the paragraph with my use of the iPad and try to match it to yourself. You have to answer for yourself if you use the laptop intensively and you are bothered, for example, by its greater weight, temperature or anything else.

Personally, I don't regret buying an Apple iPad for a minute. It is an excellent helper at home and on the go. At the moment, the App Store is in its infancy, but over time, even better applications will appear here, which will make full use of the iPad's capabilities. The developers got a new platform, now let's just wait and see what they have in store for us. In the next few days, I will bring you reviews of individual iPad applications!
