Press Release: QNAP® Systems, Inc. (QNAP) today introduced the operating system QTS 5.0.1 beta for NAS that further enhances security, convenience and performance – including secure RAID disk swapping to increase system reliability, Windows Search Protocol (WSP) support for NAS shares, and improved SMB signing and encryption performance. After introducing free exFAT file system support for x86-based NAS devices in the earlier version of QTS, QTS 5.0.1 now adds free exFAT support for ARM-based NAS devices, providing users with faster transfer of large files and smoother media editing.

Key new features in QTS 5.0.1:

  • Replacing RAID drives with spare drives before potential failure:
If disk errors are detected through SMART values, they will predict DA Drive Analyzer or system slowdown, the damaged disk can be replaced with a spare disk in the RAID group at any time. This significantly increases system reliability and eliminates the need to rebuild the RAID array.
  • Free exFAT support for NAS devices with ARM architecture:
exFAT is a file system that supports files up to 16 EB in size and is optimized for flash storage (such as SD cards and USB devices) - helping to speed up the transfer and sharing of large multimedia files.
  • Increased transfer rates for SMB signing and encryption:
QTS 5.0.1 supports AES-NI hardware acceleration, which increases the efficiency of data signing and encryption/decryption over SMB 3.0 (Server Message Block), so the transfer speed is 5x faster than without AES-NI hardware acceleration. It helps increase system performance while securing sensitive company data.
  • Windows Search Protocol (WSP) support for mounted shared folders:
QTS 5.0.1 now supports the Microsoft WSP protocol, which is based on the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. With WSP, users can browse NAS shares through Windows when an SMB drive is connected to the NAS.
