Press Release: QNAP® Systems, Inc. (QNAP) introduced the operating system QTS 5.0.1 for NAS that strengthens overall security and offers increased convenience and performance for data protection and everyday use. New features include secure RAID disk swapping, Windows® Search Protocol support for NAS shares, and support for enterprise Self-Encrypting Drives (SEDs). QNAP ARM-based and x86 NAS running QTS 5.0.1 now also support the exFAT file system at no additional cost, providing users with a wider range of options and greater device compatibility when transferring large files.

"In the information age, efficient data transfers and file sharing must go hand in hand with security and reliability. This is QNAP's main goal in developing QTS, an intelligent operating system for NAS,” said Sam Lin, product manager of QNAP. Delivers "QNAP introduces stricter security standards and granular management features to help businesses and individuals manage data with confidence while protecting their digital assets and mitigating growing security threats. QTS 5.0.1

Key new features in QTS 5.0.1:

  • Replacing RAID drives before potential failure:
If disk errors are detected through SMART values, they will predict DA Drive Analyzer or system slowdown, the affected disks can be replaced with spare disks in the RAID group at any time. This significantly increases system reliability and eliminates the need to rebuild the RAID array.
  • Free exFAT support for NAS devices with ARM architecture:
File system exFAT supports files up to 16 EB and is optimized for flash storage (such as SD cards and USB devices) - helping to speed up the transfer and sharing of large multimedia files.
  • Increased transfer rates for SMB signing and encryption:
QTS 5.0.1 supports AES-NI hardware acceleration, which increases the efficiency of data signing and encryption/decryption over SMB 3.0 (Server Message Block), so the transfer speed is up to 5x faster than without AES-NI hardware acceleration. It helps increase system performance while securing sensitive company data.
  • Windows Search Protocol (WSP) support for mounted shared folders:
QTS 5.0.1 now supports the Microsoft WSP protocol, which is based on the SMB protocol. With WSP, users can browse NAS shares through Windows when an SMB drive is connected to the NAS.
  • Support for Enterprise Self-Encrypting Drives (SEDs)
In addition to TCG-OPAL, QTS 5.0.1 also supports TCG-Enterprise SED compatible HDDs and SSDs. Users can take advantage of built-in disk encryption to gain an additional layer of data protection without the need for additional software or NAS system resources. This is particularly beneficial for organizations that store highly confidential information, such as in the public sector, healthcare and banking.
