QNAP's new operating system "QuTS hero" uses 128-bit ZFS file system, which focuses on data integrity, making it ideal for enterprise storage applications with an emphasis on data protection. QuTS hero also includes an App Center to expand the potential of NAS applications. The main features of the QuTS hero h4.5.1 system include:

  • Automatic loading of WORM
WORM is used to prevent modification of stored data. Data in WORM shares can only be written to and cannot be deleted or modified to ensure data integrity.
  • Live VM migration
When NAS software/hardware needs to be updated/maintained, the user can move running VMs between different NAS without impacting VM availability, giving you flexibility and efficiency for VM applications.
  • WPA2 Enterprise
WPA2 Enterprise provides wireless security for enterprise networks (including certificate authority, encryption key, and advanced encryption/decryption).
  • Adding the NAS to Azure AD DS
By adding QuTS hero NAS to Azure AD DS, IT staff does not need to perform local deployment and management of a domain controller and achieves greater efficiency in managing user accounts and permissions for multiple NAS devices.
  • QuLog Center
It provides a graphical statistical classification of error/warning events and access, and helps to quickly monitor and respond to potential system risks. Logs from multiple QNAP NAS devices can be centralized to QuLog Center on a specific NAS for efficient management.
  • QuFirewall for network security
It supports IPv6, access lists for firewalls, and GeoIP filtering to restrict access based on geographic location for increased network security.

Other key features of QuTS hero:

  • Main Memory Read Cache (L1 ARC), SSD Second Level Read Cache (L2 ARC) and ZFS Intent Log (ZIL) for synchronous transactions with power failure protection to improve performance and security.
  • It supports a storage capacity of up to 1 petabyte for individual shared folders.
  • It supports native handling of standard RAID levels and other ZFS RAID layouts (RAID Z) and flexible storage stack architecture. RAID Triple Parity and Triple Mirror ensure higher levels of data protection.
  • Block inline data deduplication, compression, and decompression reduce file size to save storage capacity, optimize performance, and improve SSD lifespan.
  • AES-NI hardware acceleration increases the efficiency of data signing and encryption/decryption over SMB 3.
  • Supports Fiber Channel (FC) SAN in NAS devices with QNAP 16Gb/32Gb FC cards, ideal for post-production storage.
  • Install various apps from the App Center to enable hosting of virtual machines and containers, perform local/remote/cloud backups, create cloud storage gateways and much more.
