The day before yesterday, Apple quietly updated some MacBook Pro configurations that are now available with very powerful 8-core processors from Intel. Today, the results of the first tests appeared on the website, which indicate how much better the new peak configurations are compared to their predecessors.

The new 8-core processor is available in the 15″ variant of the MacBook Pro. Its starting price is set at 87 thousand crowns, with the fact that for an additional fee of less than six and a half thousand it is possible to pay extra for an even more powerful chip with a higher frequency of 100 MHz. Apple boasted in a press release that the new configurations are up to 40% more powerful than the ones they replace. However, benchmarks show quite different results.

Geekbench benchmark results were the first to appear on the web. In it, the new 15″ MacBook Pro in the top configuration scored 5 points in the single-threaded test and 879 points in the multi-threaded test. Compared to the previous top configuration of the 29″ MacBook Pro, this is an increase in the score by 148, or 15%. However, these results should be taken with considerable caution.

First of all, Geekbench is not a completely informative test, the results of which can be easily translated into real use. The second big unknown is how the new 8-core processors will behave in a longer-term load. MacBook Pros generally have a problem with relatively limited cooling, the shortcomings of which are also manifested in the 4 core models. The top processor from Intel will be considerably more difficult to cool, so it can be expected that it will throttle very quickly under load. However, we will have to wait a few more days for further results from real tests.
