It's been exactly a week since Apple's conference in New York introduced the new MacBook Air. This year, the cheapest laptop from Apple got a faster processor of the latest generation from Intel, a Retina display, Touch ID, Thunderbolt 3 ports, a new keyboard and several other improvements. The novelty goes on sale tomorrow, but as is customary, Apple has provided the notebook to several foreign journalists for a test, so that they can evaluate it professionally before it appears on the shelves of retailers. Let's summarize their verdicts.

Reviews of the new MacBook Air are mostly positive. Although some journalists did not forgive the reproach towards Apple for delaying the update for several years, they still praised the company in the final for not completely hating the product line. And most importantly, this is a computer that users have been clamoring for for quite some time, but in the end they got exactly what they wanted. This year's Air offers all the main innovations that have happened with Apple laptops in recent years - whether it's Touch ID, Retina display, a keyboard with a third-generation butterfly mechanism or Thunderbolt 3 ports.

The words of praise were directed mainly towards the battery life, which is the best for the MacBook Air of all current Apple laptops. For example, Lauren Goode from Wired it says it got about eight hours of battery life while browsing the web in Safari, using Slack, iMessage, editing a few photos in Lightroom, and setting the brightness to 60 to 70 percent. If he had reduced the brightness to an even lower level and forgiven the photo editing, then surely he would have achieved an even better result.

Editor Dana Wollman z Engadget on the other hand, in her review she focused on the display, which uses the same technology as the 12-inch MacBook. The MacBook Air's display covers the sRGB color gamut, which is satisfactory for the price category, but the colors are not as good as the more expensive MacBook Pro, which offers a more professional P3 color gamut. Similarly noticeable is the difference in the maximum brightness of the display, which was pointed out by the server AppleInsider. While the MacBook Pro reaches up to 500 nits, the new Air only reaches 300.

However, most reviewers agreed that the new MacBook Air is currently a much better buy than the 12″ MacBook. Brian Heater of TechCrunch wasn't even afraid to say that without some major upgrade, a smaller and more expensive Retina MacBook doesn't make sense in the future. In short, the new MacBook Air is better in almost every way, and its weight is light enough to be suitable for frequent travel. Therefore, although this year's MacBook Air does not bring any significant increase in performance and still manages more basic operations, including ordinary photo editing, it is currently the best laptop for ordinary users.

MacBook Air (2018) goes on sale tomorrow, not only abroad, but also in the Czech Republic. On our market it will be available, for example, at iWant. The price for the basic model with 128 GB of storage and 8 GB of operating memory is CZK 35.
