iOS 7 will be rolling out to millions of iPhones, iPads and iPod touches around the world in the next few hours, and the first thing users will notice is the radically redesigned user interface. Hand in hand with this, however, are also the basic applications on which Apple demonstrates the possibilities of the new iOS 7. In addition to graphic changes, we will also see several functional innovations.

All Apple applications in iOS 7 are characterized by a new facelift, i.e. a new font, new control element graphics and a simpler-looking interface. In essence, these are the same applications as in iOS 6, but they are actually quite different, more modern-looking, and fit perfectly into the new system. But even though the apps look different, they work the same, and that's what's important. The experience from the previous systems was preserved, it just got a new coat.

Safari

[three_fourth last=”no”]

Safari is certainly one of the most used applications in iOS, browsing the Internet on mobile devices is becoming more and more popular. That's why Apple has focused on making browsing the web even more enjoyable for users than before.

The new Safari in iOS 7 therefore displays only the most important controls at a given time, so that as much content as possible can be seen on the screen. The upper address and search bar has undergone a significant change - following the example of all other browsers (on computers and mobile devices), this line is finally unified in Safari, i.e. in a single text field you enter either a straight address or a password that you want to search for, for example in Google. Because of this, the keyboard layout has partially changed. The space bar is bigger and the characters for entering addresses have disappeared - dash, slash, underscore, colon and the shortcut for entering the domain. All that's left is an ordinary dot, you have to enter everything else in an alternative layout with characters.

The behavior of the top panel is also important. To save space, it always displays only the top-level domain, regardless of which part of the site you are in. And when you scroll down the page, the panel gets even smaller. Along with this, the bottom panel where the rest of the controls are located also disappears. In particular, its disappearance will ensure more space for its own content. To re-display the bottom panel, just scroll up or tap the address bar.

The functions of the bottom panel remain the same as in iOS 6: back button, step forward, page sharing, bookmarks and overview of open panels. To move backward and forward, it is also possible to use the gesture of dragging your finger from left to right and vice versa.

Safari in iOS 7 offers even more viewing space when used in landscape mode. This is because all control elements disappear when scrolling.

The menu of bookmarks has also undergone changes. It is now divided into three sections – the bookmarks themselves, the list of saved articles and the list of shared links of your friends from social networks. Open panels are displayed in 3D in a row in the new Safari, and below them you will find a list of open panels on other devices if you use Safari and its synchronization. You can also switch to private browsing in the preview of open panels, but Safari still can't separate the two modes. So you either view all panels in public or private mode. The advantage, however, is that you no longer have to go to the Settings in a lengthy and above all unnecessary way for this option.

Email

The new application in Mail in iOS 7 is mainly known for its new, cleaner look, but Apple has also prepared several minor improvements that will make working with electronic messages easier.

Working with individual conversations and emails is now easier. The swipe gesture after the selected conversion or e-mail now offers not only the option to delete them, but also a second button Další, through which you can call up a reply, forward the message, add a flag to it, mark it as unread or move it somewhere. In iOS 6, these options were only available when viewing a message detail, so now we have two ways to access these actions.

In the basic view of all mailboxes and accounts, it is now possible to display custom folders for all marked messages, for all unread messages, for all drafts, messages with attachments, sent or e-mails in the trash. This can be achieved with the click of a button Adjust and selecting individual dynamic components. So if you have multiple accounts on your device, a unified inbox that displays all unread messages from all accounts can be very beneficial for you.

A calendar app that users were replacing with third-party solutions. In iOS 7, Apple comes with new graphics as well as a slightly new look at things.

The calendar in iOS 7 offers three layers of calendar view. The first annual overview is an overview of all 12 months, but only the current day is marked in color. You will not find out here which days you have scheduled events. You can access them only by clicking on the selected month. At that moment, the second layer will appear - the monthly preview. There is a gray dot for each day that contains an event. The current day is colored red. The third layer is a preview of the individual days, which also includes a list of the events themselves. If you are only interested in a list of all scheduled events, regardless of date, just click on the magnifying glass button where this list has been moved. At the same time, you can search directly in it.

Gestures are also supported in the new Calendar, thanks to which you can scroll through individual days, months and years. Even in iOS 7, however, the Calendar cannot yet create so-called smart events. You must manually fill in the event name, venue and time. Some third-party applications can read all this information directly from the text when you type, for example Meeting on September 20 from 9 to 18 in Prague and an event with the given details will be automatically created for you.

Reminders

In the Notes, there are changes that should make our tasks even easier. You can sort the task lists into tabs with their own name and color for easier orientation. Tabs are always opened and closed by clicking on the title. Pulling down the tab lists then reveals a hidden menu with a field for searching and displaying scheduled tasks, i.e. tasks with a reminder on a certain day. Creating new tasks is still very easy, you can assign a priority to them more easily, and location-based notifications have also been improved. By choosing the area where you want Task Reminders to alert you, you also set a radius (minimum 100 meters), so this feature can be used even more precisely.

Phone and Messages

Practically nothing has changed on the two basic applications, without which no phone can do. Both Phone and Messages look different, but work the same.

The only new feature of the Phone is the ability to block selected contacts, which many will welcome. All you have to do is open the details of the given contact, scroll to the bottom and then block the number. You will then not receive any calls, messages or FaceTime calls from that number. You can then manage the list of blocked contacts in Settings, where you can also enter new numbers. In the list of favorite contacts, iOS 7 can finally display at least small photos for faster orientation, the list of all contacts remained unchanged. During the calls themselves, photos of the contacts are no longer so important, because they are blurred in the background.

The biggest news in Messages, but a very welcome one, is the possibility of sent and received messages. Until now, iOS only displayed the time for a few messages at a time, even though they didn't have to be sent at the same time. In iOS 7, swiping from right to left shows the time for each message. Another change is the Contact button when viewing a conversation, which has replaced the Edit function. Pressing it brings up a bar with the contact's name and three icons for calling, FaceTime, and viewing the person's details. It was already possible to call and view information and contacts in messages, but you had to scroll all the way up (or tap on the status bar).

The editing function hasn't disappeared, it's just activated differently. Just hold your finger on the conversation bubble and it will bring up a context menu with options Copy a Další. Clicking on the second option opens the editing menu, where you can mark multiple messages at once, which can be forwarded, deleted, or delete the entire conversation.

There is one more news regarding the phone and Messages – iOS 7 changes the already almost iconic notification sounds after years. New sounds are ready in iOS 7 for a new incoming message or call. Several dozens of pleasant ringtones and sound notifications replaced the previous repertoire. However, the old ringtones are still available in the folder Classic.

FaceTime

FaceTime has undergone very fundamental changes. This is new on the iPhone as a separate application, previously the function was only available through the call application, while on the iPad and iPod touch it was also available in previous versions of the system. The app is very simple, it shows a list of all contacts (regardless of whether they have iPhone contacts or not), a list of favorite contacts and call history just like in the phone app. An interesting feature of the application is that the background is made up of a blurred view from the phone's front camera.

The second big news is FaceTime Audio. The protocol was previously only used for video calls on Wi-Fi and later on 3G. FaceTime now enables pure voice VoIP with a data rate of about 10 kb/s. After iMessage, this is another "blow" for operators who are already losing profits from SMS. FaceTime Audio also works reliably on 3G and the sound is significantly better than during a normal call. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to make calls outside of iOS devices, so other multi-platform VoIP solutions (Viber, Skype, Hangouts) will not replace it for many people. However, due to integration into the system, FaceTime is easily accessible from the phone book, and thanks to audio calls, it could be used more than its video variant.

Camera

[three_fourth last=”no”]

The camera turned black in iOS 7 and started using gestures. To switch between individual modes, you don't have to tap anywhere, but just slide your finger across the screen. This way you switch between filming, taking photos, taking panoramas, as well as a new mode for taking square photos (Instagram users will know). The buttons for setting the flash, activating HDR and selecting the camera (front or back) remain in the upper panel. Somewhat inexplicably, the option to activate the grid has disappeared from the Camera, for which you have to go to the Device Settings. What is new is the button in the lower right corner (if you are shooting portrait).

Apple has prepared eight filters for iOS 7 that can be used in real time when taking photos (only iPhone 5, 5C, 5S and fifth generation iPod touch). At the press of a button, the screen switches to a matrix of nine windows that show a preview of the camera using the given filters, making it easier to decide which filter to use. If you select a filter, the icon will be colored. If you are not sure which of the eight will be the best, you can add a filter even after taking the photo.

An interesting change is also the fact that iOS 7 offers a few pixels smaller window for the preview of the captured shot, but paradoxically, this is to the benefit of the cause. In iOS 6, this window was bigger, but you didn't actually see the whole picture when you took a photo, as it was finally saved to the library. This is now changing in iOS 7 and the full photo can now be seen in the reduced "viewfinder".

The last improvement is the ability to take photos in batches. This is not quite the "Burst Mode" that Apple showed with the iPhone 5s, which will not only allow you to quickly take photos, but then easily select the best photo and discard the rest. Here, just by holding the shutter button, the phone will start taking pictures in the fastest possible sequence until you release the shutter button. All photos taken this way are saved to the library and must be deleted manually afterwards.

Pictures

The biggest new feature in the image library is the way to view their dates and locations, which makes browsing through them a little easier, whether you have created different albums or not. Images, like Calendar, offers three preview layers. The least detailed is the preview by year of acquisition. When you open the selected year, you will see photos sorted into groups both by location and date of capture. The photos are still very small in the preview, however if you slide your finger over them, a slightly larger photo will appear. The third layer already shows photos by individual days, i.e. the most detailed preview.

However, if you don't like the new way of viewing photos, iOS 7 also maintains the current way, i.e. browsing by created albums. iCloud shared photos also have a separate panel in iOS 7. When editing individual images, new filters can also be used, which can be applied directly during photography on selected devices.

Hudba

The music application remained practically the same in iOS 7 in terms of functions. In terms of appearance, Music has been recolored in a combination of colors, as in the entire system, it is placed on the content, in the case of music, it is album images. In the artist tab, instead of the cover of the first album in the sequence, the image of the artist that iTunes searches for is displayed, but sometimes it happens that instead of the image, only text with the name of the artist is displayed. We can also see improvements in the album list, which resembles iTunes 11.

The player's main screen has replaced the repeat, shuffle, and Genius list icons with text. The album tracklist looks the same as the artist's album lists, plus you'll see a nice bouncing bar animation for the song you're playing in the list. The iconic Cover Flow has disappeared from the app when the phone is rotated to landscape. It was replaced by a matrix with album images, which is much more practical after all.

Another new feature will be especially welcomed by those who buy their music in the iTunes Store. Purchased music can now be downloaded directly from the music application. The biggest novelty of the music application in iOS 7 is therefore the brand new iTunes Radio service. For now, it is only available for the US and Canada, but you can also use it in our country, you just need to have an American account in iTunes.

iTunes Radio is an internet radio station that learns your music tastes and plays the songs you should like. You can also create your own stations based on different songs or authors and gradually tell iTunes Radio whether you like one or another song and whether it should continue playing it. You can then buy every song you listen to on iTunes Radio straight to your library. iTunes Radio is free to use, but you will occasionally encounter advertisements while listening. iTunes Match subscribers can use the service without ads.

App Store

The principles of the App Store have been preserved. Along with the new facelift, however, several changes have come. There is a new tab in the middle of the bottom panel Near Me, which will offer you the most popular apps that are being downloaded around your current location. This function replaces Genius.

Many users will certainly be pleased with the implementation of the Wish List, i.e. the list of applications that we would like to purchase in the future. You can access the list using the button in the upper right corner, and you can add applications to it using the share button for the selected application. Only paid applications can be added for obvious reasons. Wish Lists sync across devices including desktop iTunes.

The last new feature, and perhaps the one that will become the most used, is the option to activate the automatic download of new updates. This means that you will no longer have to go to the App Store for each new update, but the new version will be downloaded automatically. In the App Store, you will only find a list of updated applications with an overview of what is new. Finally, Apple also increased the size limit of downloaded applications over the mobile Internet to 100 MB.

Weather

If you were hoping that the weather icon would finally show the current forecast, we have to disappoint you. It is still a static image unlike the Clock app icon which shows the current time. Big. The original cards have been stretched to the full size of the display and we can see beautiful realistic weather animations in the background. Especially during bad weather such as a storm, hurricane or snow, the animations are especially vivid and a joy to watch.

The layout of the elements has been rearranged, the upper part is dominated by the numerical display of the current temperature and above it the name of the city with a textual description of the weather. Tapping on a number reveals more detail – humidity, chance of precipitation, wind and feel temperature. In the middle, you can see the hourly forecast for the next half-day, and below that is the five-day forecast expressed by an icon and temperatures. You switch between cities as in previous versions, now you can view all cities at once in a list, where the background of each item is animated again.

Other

Changes in other apps are mostly cosmetic with no new features or improvements. Some little things can be found after all. The compass app has a new spirit level mode that you can switch to by swiping your finger to the left. The spirit level shows it with two overlapping circles. The Stocks application can also display a ten-month overview of stock price developments.
