It takes a certain amount of courage to start a company called Nic. Negotiating with big names then certain abilities. The company Nothing is really young, with only three products in its portfolio so far, although it does not lack confidence. But compared to Apple, it still lags a lot.

It was Apple that the company was compared to after its creation, not only thanks to the involvement of the "father of the iPod" Tony Fadell and the success of CEO Carl Pei, who also founded OnePlus before Nothing and certainly does not lack a certain vision with which Steve Jobs was most often associated. Nothing has also been compared to Apple for its mission to remove barriers between people and technology, creating a seamless digital future. But somehow it was forgotten that having strong words is not enough.

NothingPhone (1)

Why bother with names. The company named its first phone simply as "Phone 1". When it was released last July, of course it ran on Android 12, but still with the manufacturer's own superstructure, which was supposed to bring a fresh wind to Android in terms of what it looks like and what it can do. But instead of the company trying to imitate Apple with access to updates, it is only now catching up with the competition.

It's different in the Android world than it is with iPhones and their iOS. When Google released Android 13 for its Pixel phones last August, it was only then that beta tests of manufacturers' add-ons for their phones began. Samsung managed to update the entire portfolio by the end of the year, others release updates here and there, especially for their flagships. Now an update for Nothing Phone (1) is coming, but it does not upgrade the system to version 2, but only to 1.5.

So there's a design upgrade, new customization options, a new Weather app, a QR code scanner in the quick menu bar, an improved Camera interface, and apps should load 50% faster. Of course, new sound and light effects have also been added, which make the device different from all the others.

The future with a question mark

The company cannot be denied the pursuit of design differentiation, when it simply bet on the transparent appearance of its products. You may or may not like it, but it's different and impressive (even with the Phone 1's carousel effects). But that's really all. If you paint a pig with lipstick, it's still a pig. So when you give an Android phone lighting effects and a fresh design, it's still an Android phone. Unfortunately, no one will do anything about it, because they are afraid to make an Android superstructure completely different, even in Nothing. This way they at least have a chance to attract competitors' customers, who will still know what to expect from Android.

In any case, the effort should be appreciated. Nothing is a really young brand, as it was only founded in October 2020. It has interesting people at its head who can take it far, but the question is whether it even has a place in the crowded Android market. After all, that's why she got into TWS headphones in the first place, before the phone arrived, to create capital for its development. After all, a successor is already preparing for this, who should not fall into the middle class but into the highest. The iPhone certainly doesn't have to worry, but such Chinese predators might. Nothing is a British company based in London, which may also be sympathetic to many.
