If you've ever taken a close-up look at classic EarPods or AirPods, you might have been able to pause over one element. The in-ear front of the headphones makes a fairly clear sense. There is a small speaker for sound output, which flows directly into the user's ears. Practically the same speaker is also located on the back, in the case of EarPods, you can also find it on the foot itself. But what is it for?

However, this second "speaker" has a simple justification. In fact, it plays a rather important role, especially in the case of traditional wired EarPods, which were completely closed from the bottom of the leg, since the cable itself ran through those places. The AirPods (Pro) wireless headphones are much better due to their more open design, which is why we don't find the same element on the foot.

But the truth is that it is not a speaker. In fact, this hole is intended for air flow, which Apple directly explained when it was product presentation. It is the air flow that is quite important for such a product, as this way the extremely necessary release of pressure occurs, which subsequently has a positive effect on the resulting sound quality. In terms of quality, it mainly affects the low or bass tones. If you still have old EarPods at home, or even use them regularly, you can see for yourself. In this case, put the headphones in your ears, select a song (preferably one from the bass boosted section, in which the bass tones are emphasized) and then cover the mentioned element from the foot of the headphones with your finger. It's like you lose all the bass at once.

As we mentioned above, this is no longer the case with wireless AirPods. Although they are also closed from the bottom, the key are the holes on the main part of the headphones, which serve exactly the same purpose and thus ensure proper airflow. In these models, it is no longer so easy to cover the holes. In the end, however, this is an absolute trifle that the vast majority of users will never even notice.
