Apple TV has its place in Apple's portfolio, and the current duo of news clearly indicates that the company does not want to say goodbye to this product. It got rid of the outdated HD version, and although the new ones offer more memory and a more powerful chip, they are even cheaper. But what does it all actually mean? There are three levels that we can go through in our reasoning.

In a press release, Apple presented the Apple TV 4K for 2022 in the Wi-Fi version for CZK 4 and the Wi-Fi + Ethernet version for CZK 190. The first is fitted with 4GB of storage, the second with 790GB. Both can be ordered now, both will be available from November 64th. Both also feature the A128 Bionic chip that the company introduced with the iPhone 4, and which is also present in the current iPhone 15. Therefore, the question arises, why does such a device need such power?

New tvOS

When the company introduced the Apple TV 4K for 2021, it only got the A12Z chip, while we already had better chips that the company used in both iPhones and iPads. This year, however, it changed its strategy and went for practically the best, because the A16 Bionic beats only in the iPhone 14 Pro. Even after a year, when the iPhone 13 has been on the market, it is still a maximally powerful device that has no problem with any games or applications.

By giving its smart box such performance, Apple may be preparing a new tvOS for it, which will be significantly more demanding than the current one. After all, it doesn't have too many demands, it's cumbersome and actually remains the same for many years, when it's really only minimally innovative. But Apple may begin to focus more on this space, and quite possibly in combination with some upcoming headset. We could learn more in June at WWDC23.

Hry in Apple Arcade

Of course, games need the most power. Apple has its Apple Arcade platform, but it doesn't exactly abound with AAA titles. Perhaps the company is about to change this, and in order for the Apple TV to be sufficiently ready for new incoming titles, it also needs sufficient performance, which the previous model did not offer. There is no mention of a game stream here, because the stream takes place in the cloud and is not dependent on the performance of the device in any way.

Long term support without update

But the most likely reason for the increase in performance may be somewhere else. The fact that Apple gave the new generation such a powerful chip can also testify to the fact that it will not want to touch it for a long time. Now, the device may not even need that much power, but if it is not updated for the next few years, this black box could easily hit its limits. So if Apple was still selling it, it could also be rightly criticized for that. That being said, it will last at least as long as iPhone 13 support.
