Some news about the mythical Apple Car has recently started to emerge again. But does it make sense to focus your attention on something like this at all? I'd rather the company focus on things other than creating a unicorn.

A bit of unverified and purely speculative history, which is a certain open secret: Apple allegedly started a project on its own car in 2014, only to put it on ice two years later and resume it again for another four, i.e. in 2020. It should be led by a certain John Giannandrea, who is Apple's head of AI and machine learning, with Kevin Lynch on hand. He usually presents news about the Apple Watch at the Keynote.

Next year, the company should have a finished car design, a year later a list of functions, and in 2025 the car should already be tested in real use. Contrary to the original reports, it will not be a fully autonomous car, but there will still be a steering wheel and pedals, when you will be able to intervene in the steering (it will be necessary in certain situations). The installed chip should be some kind of M series, i.e. the one we now see in Mac computers. LiDAR sensors and various calculations running on a remote cloud should not be missing. The price will be affordable, just under $100, i.e. some two million CZK and some change.

Apple Car as a financial flop?

Above, we have summarized the current information that is circulating about the Apple Car. Nothing is official, nothing is confirmed, it's all just based on leaks, speculation and conjecture and I sincerely hope it stays that way. I can't think of a single reason why Apple should even venture into its own car. Sure, there may be different concepts running within the company, but that's still a long way from the final product.

Does a company that manufactures electronics in the form of smartphones, tablets, computers, watches, speakers, smart-boxes need to sink finances and human resources into something like a passenger car? Whether we like it or not, Apple is primarily about money, i.e. how much revenue it has. He needs to cut his products like hot dogs so he can sell them anyway. Even though his computers and phones are priced in the premium segment, he is doing well. But it's another thing to save a "few" thousand on an Apple product as opposed to a few million.

The more products Apple sells, the more it earns. But who would buy his car in the price range of 2 million CZK? The Apple Car as a physical car would make sense in the event that it would not be a bulky luxury ship on wheels for a financial sum unaffordable for the vast majority of the planet's inhabitants, but a small city car that would ideally be the size of a shopping bag (i.e. Škoda Citigo). Comparing it to something like the Tesla Model S is completely beside the point. Moreover, the only buyer with a certain potential seems to be the government, and then only a few rich people. In this regard, the Apple Car project appears to be a clear financial flop.

I prefer CarPlay and HomePod

But why rush into a physical product at all? Apple has its CarPlay, which it should take to a higher level. After all, we already have certain rumors about it. He should make an agreement with the car companies not to make him the hardware (i.e. the car), but to give him full access to the software so that the user can convert the car company's to the Apple one. So far, CarPlay has a lot to offer.

If I could vote, I would definitely be for Mr. John Giannandrea to cough up some car and start taking care of the Siri extension. Thanks to this, Apple could officially start selling even just the stupid HomePod mini in more markets, where it would also have more use with native language support (and this would also bring CarPlay to more markets in an official way). So Apple Car no thanks I don't need I don't want. I'll settle for something smaller.
