Some of Apple's decisions are truly strange. If you had to identify one product that can make people angry, it would certainly be the classic rubberized Lightning or USB-C cable for charging iPhones, but also iPads and indeed AirPods and other accessories. But why hasn't Apple replaced it with a better option yet when it offers it itself?

Along with the introduction of the 24" iMac, Apple also introduced a braided power cable. If it was only the case with which you will charge the iMac itself, it might not be so strange. But already when you bought this computer, you received a keyboard and a mouse or a trackpad, in the package of which the power cable was brought out in the same color as the iMac itself and the accessories, and it was no longer the old familiar rubberized one, but also the braided one.

With frequent use, Apple's classic rubberized cables really like to break, especially in the connector area, even though they are reinforced there. Almost every iPhone user who has had to buy a new one sooner or later has encountered this. They also often get tangled due to the material used. The braided cable solves everything - it is more durable and also handles the dream better. So why does Apple only offer it for computers, since, except for the iMac, it is also available for the new 14 and 16" MacBook Pros and accessories, namely the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad?

Split into desktop and mobile devices

You won't find a braided cable on iPhones, iPads or Apple Watch. Even though the company switched to USB-C for most of its products, where you can find either Lightning, USB-C or a magnetic connector for charging the Apple Watch on the other side, braiding does not happen in any of the cases. In addition, they are popular products that have far more sales than just accessories in the form of Mac peripherals. And maybe that's the problem.

With Apple churning out millions of products in the form of phones, tablets and watches, it would probably cost more money to include this new cable with each one. Or it just doesn't have the production capacity for these new cables, when historically it only supplied rubberized ones and, for that matter, even EarPods headphones. By adding braided cables to the desktop as well, it may be trying to differentiate it a bit from mobile products. Either way, you can't thank him for that. If we found braided cables in the product packaging, we would certainly not be angry with the company for it.

EU and e-waste

But the second possibility is also possibly connected to the cause of electronic waste. We will see if Apple will have to switch to USB-C in its iPhones as well, when in such a step it could make a more drastic change in the replacement of the cable material, which may not make sense to it now, because in the case of Lightning it would be extra work.

Or any connector from iPhones and iPads will be removed completely, so that any entanglement with the cables supplied with mobile devices would not have to be solved at all. Although, at least with the iPad, the question would be how long we would have to wirelessly charge such a machine to its full battery capacity. Apple would also have to come up with something new for the Apple Watch, whose magnetic charger of course also only has a rubberized cable. And this also applies to the MagSafe charger for iPhones 12 and later.
