There are probably a few iPhone (or iPod Touch) users among the readers who bought cheap non-original USB cables for charging and synchronization from Aukra or eBay for their device. However, many of you will not like the situation after installing iPhone OS 3.1 - a non-original cable may stop charging your iPhone.

This is exactly what happened to me after updating to iPhone OS 3.1 today. The update went without any problems, the USB cable was charging, synchronizing, but after loading the new version of the iPhone system, I found out after a while that the USB cable does not charge and does not even show the iPhone in iTunes. So I tried unplugging it and plugging it in and what did I find out - charging via this accessory is not supported with the triangle warning!

Yes, the non-genuine cable stopped charging my iPhone 3GS after updating to iPhone OS 3.1. My iPhone also stopped showing up in iTunes and even though the iPhone said it was syncing, it took too long to sync. After about 15 minutes of syncing, I found that only 1 app was updated! So my non-genuine USB cable can go in the trash. I will have to buy an original Apple cable to charge and sync in multiple locations. I just don't know if it would be cheaper to buy an iPod with a cable from the bazaar...

I charged the iPhone with the original cable for a while, everything worked perfectly. After some time, I tried a non-original cable again. Result? The cable charged for about 1 minute then stopped. But I no longer saw the message that this accessory is not supported. That I lost the cable just after the iPhone OS 3.1 update? I doubt it's a coincidence.. But certainly not every non-original cable stops working. What is your experience?

ps The cable charged perfectly fine for more than a year, it didn't even have problems transferring large files like some other non-original USB cables. In my experience, if the cable does not understand the iPhone, it does not respond to it at all. This time, however, the iPhone reacts either with a screen that the accessory is not supported, or at least after 1-2 minutes it signals charging. Synchronization happens in both cases, but it is extremely slow.

I was warned in the comments that it might be an iTunes 9 problem. It seemed to me that under iTunes 9 and the old firmware, everything still worked and charged and synced fine, and I rather see the problem in iPhone OS 3.1, but it can it can be different..
