There are probably a few iPhone (or iPod Touch) users among the readers who bought cheap non-original USB cables for charging and synchronization from Aukra or eBay for their device. However, many of you will not like the situation after installing iPhone OS 3.1 - a non-original cable may stop charging your iPhone.
This is exactly what happened to me after updating to iPhone OS 3.1 today. The update went without any problems, the USB cable was charging, synchronizing, but after loading the new version of the iPhone system, I found out after a while that the USB cable does not charge and does not even show the iPhone in iTunes. So I tried unplugging it and plugging it in and what did I find out - charging via this accessory is not supported with the triangle warning!
Yes, the non-genuine cable stopped charging my iPhone 3GS after updating to iPhone OS 3.1. My iPhone also stopped showing up in iTunes and even though the iPhone said it was syncing, it took too long to sync. After about 15 minutes of syncing, I found that only 1 app was updated! So my non-genuine USB cable can go in the trash. I will have to buy an original Apple cable to charge and sync in multiple locations. I just don't know if it would be cheaper to buy an iPod with a cable from the bazaar...
I charged the iPhone with the original cable for a while, everything worked perfectly. After some time, I tried a non-original cable again. Result? The cable charged for about 1 minute then stopped. But I no longer saw the message that this accessory is not supported. That I lost the cable just after the iPhone OS 3.1 update? I doubt it's a coincidence.. But certainly not every non-original cable stops working. What is your experience?
ps The cable charged perfectly fine for more than a year, it didn't even have problems transferring large files like some other non-original USB cables. In my experience, if the cable does not understand the iPhone, it does not respond to it at all. This time, however, the iPhone reacts either with a screen that the accessory is not supported, or at least after 1-2 minutes it signals charging. Synchronization happens in both cases, but it is extremely slow.
I was warned in the comments that it might be an iTunes 9 problem. It seemed to me that under iTunes 9 and the old firmware, everything still worked and charged and synced fine, and I rather see the problem in iPhone OS 3.1, but it can it can be different..
It is a bit bold to draw such a conclusion without finding out the wider condition - i.e. several cables, etc. It would not hurt the author to refresh his knowledge a little about what the USB cable for iPod/iPhone contains - it's exactly 4 wires, no electronics. Some non-original cables are unreliable - there can be many reasons, but they certainly do not contain any electronics like the original one. If charging from a computer doesn't work with this cable, it shouldn't work from a charger either - try it. Otherwise, the 3rd sentence from the end will probably apply.
PS> my cable from DX charges from the computer and cheerfully transfers data back and forth. I have no way to try Synchro at this moment.
Well, unfortunately something similar sometimes happens to me with the original cable. Until now, I thought it would be some kind of error on my Lenovo. Either the iPhone does not respond to the USB connection at all, or Windows tells me that the device could work as USB 2.0, but it works as USB 1.1, and the backup was successful for the fourth time yesterday :(
It happened to me already with 3.0
I bought the original through EBAY from Hong Kong (really Origo) and it costs 5 USD, so I don't understand why you should settle for non-Origo at a price sometimes even higher :) everything works as it should
My cable from KRUP computers works perfectly well ;)
Non-original cables? In these cases (including audio, video...) I don't buy it for two months, so saving a few ten crowns or two hundred seems ridiculous to me. Yes, I can never trust even the original, but if it costs a tenth of the price of the original, then that should be a warning... And cables are exactly what I buy "from hand to hand", don't take eshops...
The problem will not be in iPhone but in iTunes! :) I haven't updated my phone yet and I'm having a problem! :( At least the cable cost 10 CZK :)
The cable from DX for $1,80 works. I even have 2 samples, one with a PC and the other in my car..
It happens to me even with the original cable - that is, the iPhone simply refuses to charge, but the synchronization works. It started with the iPhone 3GS with firmware 3.0. Only sometimes. I suspected that I'm connecting the phone not directly to the Mac, but through a USB hub, which might have a problem with powering multiple devices at the same time, but I haven't noticed any dependency yet.

I know that there has been a debate about cables here, but personally, I think that the above-mentioned problem will probably be elsewhere... I have an almost new original cable for my phone, and after loading the new system into my iPhone, I have exactly the same problem... before I installed the new system sunchr. it was running on itunes 9 perfectly fine, now with the new system on my phone, I haven't even finished backing up in 15 minutes, I tried restarting both the computer and the phone but nothing helps, still the same problem, and I'm not talking about the fact that I had to connect at least 5 times and disconnect the phone before even tunes it for me...
I didn't install 3.1 at the time, but it has already happened 3 times that my iPhone completely discharged and started to overheat while charging from the network. I don't have JB and the cable was bought in iStyle for CZK 235...
Don't know what to do with it?
I also updated both iTunes and iPhone yesterday, and with the original cable, right after the update, the system told me that the device could work faster if I connect it to USB 2.0+... I ONLY have usb 2.0 on my computer and connect directly without a hub. Charging and syncing still worked, but everything was slowed down and charging took too long.
I updated itunes and fw at the same time, so it's hard to say what caused it.
I have a non-original charger, there is no problem with iPods, but the iPhone reported even before the update to 3.1 that it was a non-original accessory and refused to charge.
from the above symptoms it seems to me that for some reason the cable/driver/iphone...behaves as if it were USB 1.0
So, my experience, I have a non-original charger and before installing fw 3.1 it was charging without any problem, I mainly charged in the car, after installing 3.1 it says that the charger is not supported, after connecting the original apple cable it still charges, so the problem must obviously be in the cable. Just 3.1 does not take non-original accessories. Solution: Return data to 3.0 and the cables work :)
I think that the dog is buried a little bit elsewhere and it is a restriction of the Palm Pre device, see the rather interesting article for today, http://palmare.idnes.cz/hra-na-kocku-a-mys-apple-se-handrkuje-s-palmem-o-pristup-k-itunes-psh-/pda.asp?c=A090908_233856_pda_ham
The yellow triangle popped up when I used a non-original car charger (3gs, os 3.1), but after pulling it out and plugging it in again, it charged fine, even quite quickly. I would always prefer original cables when connecting to a computer. The former know why they cost a lot of money, and the latter are well aware of why they can sell all imitations so cheaply. And it still pays: Cheap - twice paid..
The original cable does the same thing to me straight out of the box. So I ordered another one from Aukra, indistinguishable from the original one, which unfortunately does the same thing. In addition, I get a message to connect the device to the faster usb2???
Hello, I have non-original av cables and I can only add that they are rubbish.... both are from another manufacturer and each of them cost me 750, at the time when I bought them, the original price on the Czech market was 1700 CZK, I thought I would save ... with the old version 2.1 firmware on my iPhone 3G, everything went without a problem.. in your posts, I thought I read that the cables do not contain any electronics.. the opposite is true in each of my cables there is an integrated circuit from one manufacturer, it is an octagonal mess that has the inscription removed from the case on purpose and in the other cable there is also an integrated circuit that also has the inscription removed both cables with newer versions stopped working Apple are nice bastards... nothing more than COMMERCE.. this world is really screwing me with this.. what can't you see, it's bad!! Well, I don't know anything about programming, but wouldn't it be possible to somehow find out the source code of the firmware 2.1, which has the task of integrating the hardware and recognizing it into the new firmware?? there are Jalbreaks, so don't tell me that this is a problem to solve.. if anyone has any ideas other than buying original cables, please write to me.. at david.rendek@yahoo.com I would also like to know if there is an analog output directly from the iPhone .. or if the integrators in the cables somehow convert it to PAL, thank you for the answer...
Hello. it very often happens to me that when charging, the iPhone often shows me the socket icon (charged) instead of the lightning icon, while it is only at 16% percent. I have a non-origo cable for about the third time and after a while everyone started to show it. Origo never did. The iPhone has a function that recognizes the voltage in the socket so that the phone does not burn, so if you have an old socket or a too old USB port in the PC it could also be that, but personally I think it is the cable because I have iTunes set so that it doesn't turn on when you connect the phone, but if you look at the processes on the PC, there are many other ituns applications running in the background that you can't affect, and between us ituns on windows doesn't change much. Hard to say, anyway good luck with the solution :-)
That's what happened to me from one day to the next with an iPad and an iPhone... both original chargers. We have to go to the apple doctor :-/
