In June, Apple released information about a new voluntary recall that affects the mid-15 2015″ MacBook Pro. Specifically, it concerns models sold between September 2015 and February 2017. These models are said to have a potentially defective battery that Apple will replace free of charge will exchange. Following this, today it was reported that the US authorities have issued a decision that these MacBook models are not allowed on planes in the US.

The US Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement prohibiting the above MacBooks from being transported by air. The culprits are potentially dangerous batteries that could cause a fire on board an aircraft. Defective batteries in these models can suddenly overheat on their own, causing them to explode. The altitude and pressure factor of being on board an aircraft can lead to increased instability of the batteries, thus an increased risk.

Major US airlines have already been informed of the new regulation and will follow it. The incriminated MacBooks will be included among the devices that are not allowed on board planes, both in the cabin and in the luggage compartment. It is somewhat strange that, according to the instructions, MacBooks can be allowed on board with the battery already replaced. However, there is a question as to how the airport employee at the gate will find out whether this particular 15″ MacBook Pro is already repaired or not.

Something similar happened in Europe this month. The European Aviation Safety Agency has warned European airlines about the potential danger of these machines. However, a hard ban was not ordered, airlines should only warn that similar devices should be turned off for the entire duration of the flight. Only four cargo airlines - TUI Group Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Air Italy and Air Transat - have announced the outright ban on loading the aforementioned MacBook Pros on board their planes.
