Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), places significant emphasis on privacy protection its users. That is also why, in recent years, iOS has added the option to use DuckDuckGo as the default search engine, which - unlike Google - does not track users in any way. Even so, it is still profitable.

"It's a myth that you need to follow people to make money from web search," DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg said during the conference Hacker News. His search engine is said to be making money now, so there is no need to worry about its future.

"Most of the money is still made without tracking users by offering ads based on your keywords, for example you type in car and you get an ad with a car," explains Weinberg, whose search engine DuckDuckGo joined Google, Yahoo and Bing as another iOS alternative a year ago.

“These ads are lucrative because people want to buy. All that tracking is for the rest of the internet without that intent. That's why you're being tracked all over the Internet with the same ads," Weinberg said, referring to Google in particular. The latter remains the default search engine in Safari, but for Siri or Spotlight, Apple has been betting on Microsoft's Bing for some time.

Weinberg also revealed the events behind the rise in popularity of DuckDuckGo, which prides itself on not tracking users in any way. These were, for example, Edward Snowden's revelations about spying on people by government agencies or when Google changed its policy in 2012 and allowed all its online services to be monitored.

“There are still no appropriate limits for online viewing, so it's getting crazier and more people are starting to react. It was already heading in that direction before Snowden," Weinberg added.
