Patents related to the Apple Pencil are fairly common, and some appear from time to time. Sometimes, however, these are hard-to-imagine creations that Apple allows to be patented only as recognition of a possible concept that will never be realized. However, the last granted patent belongs to the group of those that could appear in practice in the future.

A patent granted by the US Patent Office in December describes a new feature of the Apple Pencil that would allow users to use advanced control methods with the help of a large touch surface that would be able to recognize several types of gestures.

It is precisely the control options that have changed with the arrival of the 2nd generation Apple Pencil. The current 2nd generation offers a sensor that responds to the tap of a finger and gives the user the ability to switch different tools or use other elements depending on the application in use. The above-mentioned patent goes a bit further and the control options for the described touch surface would be much greater.

The touchpad would be located where the user's fingers would be in a natural grip. It could use several different gestures, from a simple tap, to scrolling, pressing, etc. The touch surface should be able to distinguish whether it is a targeted gesture or whether the fingers are just freely touching the surface during normal use of the Apple Pencil. The new control options should expand the palette of options available to the user using the Apple Pencil. He would not have to choose tools and other options manually on the iPad display.
