When Apple introduced the Smart Connector as a major innovation in the first iPad Pro in 2015, it probably expected that two years later there would be a much wider range of accessories that would be connected to the Apple tablet via the smart connector. However, the reality is different.

The magnetic Smart Connector is currently mainly used to connect the official Smart Keyboard, for all three sizes of the iPad Pro. In addition, however, only three other products using the Smart Connector are available. And that is a very sad balance after two years.

In Apple Stores we can come across two different keyboards from Logitech and also one docking station from the same manufacturer. The reason is simple - Apple works closely with Logitech and lets it see under the hood before the competition. That's why Logitech always had its own accessories ready when introducing new iPad Pros.

But no one else has imitated him yet, and there are more reasons. Magazine Fast Company he spoke with some other manufacturers talking about more expensive components connected to the Smart Connector or using Bluetooth as a better option for their products. However, Apple says that more products for the Smart Connector are on the way.

Paradoxically, Logitech's close cooperation with Apple may be responsible for the fact that other manufacturers do not flock to the Smart Connector so much. Since Logitech has access to everything earlier, it is more difficult for others to react, as their products must naturally come to market later.

For example, Incipio, which makes cases and keyboards for iPads, says that since there is already one keyboard directly from Apple and another from Logitech on the market, it has to consider whether it makes sense to invest in the Smart Connector. And possibly in what way. Other manufacturers say that there is often a long waiting period for components for the Smart Connector, which they cannot or do not want to accept.

This is also why many manufacturers prefer the classic connection via Bluetooth. Users are also used to it, so it's not a problem. For some products, such as keyboards from Brydge, Bluetooth is preferable because the location of the Smart Connector is very restrictive in the design of some models.

However, it is important to note that the Smart Connector is far from just for keyboards. It can be used for more, it can be used to charge an iPad, or the keyboard can be a built-in storage for capacity expansion. According to Apple, we will see more products…
