In a few days, we should finally see the start of sales of the iPhone 4 in the Czech Republic, and certainly a large number of users will want to exchange their older iPhone for this new product. But what happens to their data? Won't they lose them? In the following guide, we will show you how to easily transfer data to a new iPhone 4 and how to restore an older iPhone to its original factory state.
Transfer data to iPhone 4 from an older device
We will need:
- iTunes
- iPhones,
- connecting old and new iPhone to computer.
1. Connecting an older iPhone
- Connect your older iPhone via the charging cable to your computer. If iTunes doesn't launch automatically, launch it yourself.
2. Backup and transfer applications
- Now transfer the purchased apps that you don't have yet in the iTunes “Apps” menu. Right-click on your device in the “Devices” menu and select “transfer purchases”. Subsequently, the applications are copied to you.
- We will create a backup. Right-click on the device again, but now select the “Back up” option. After the backup is complete, disconnect the older iPhone.
3. Connecting a new iPhone
- Now we will repeat step 1. just with the new iPhone. That is, connect the new iPhone 4 via the charging cable to the computer and open iTunes (if it has not started itself).
4. Restoring data from a backup
- After connecting your new iPhone 4, you will see the “Set Up Your iPhone” menu in iTunes and you have two options to choose from:
- "Set up as a new iPhone" - if you choose this option, you will not have any data on the iPhone or you will get a completely clean phone.
- “Restore from the backup of” – if you want to restore data from a backup, select this option and select the backup created in step 2.
- For our guide, we choose the second option.
5. Done
- All you have to do is wait for the backup restore process to complete and you're done.
- You now have all the data from your older device on your new iPhone 4.
Factory reset an older iPhone
Now we will show you how to factory reset your iPhone. This will be especially appreciated by users who want to sell their older phone and need to remove all data from it, including traces after jailbreaking.
We will need:
- iTunes
- iPhone,
- connecting the device to the computer.
1. Connecting the iPhone
- Connect your iPhone via the charging cable to the computer. If iTunes doesn't launch automatically, launch it yourself.
2. Turn off the iPhone and DFU mode
- Turn off your iPhone and leave it connected. When it turns off, prepare to perform DFU mode. Thanks to DFU mode, you will remove all data and any traces of the jailbreak that could remain there during a normal restore.
- We perform DFU mode as follows:
- With the iPhone turned off, hold the Power button and the Home button for 10 seconds at the same time,
- Then release the Power button and continue to hold the Home button for another 10 seconds. (editor's note: Power button – is the button for putting the iPhone to sleep, Home button – is the bottom round button).
- If you want a visual demonstration of how to get into DFU mode, here is the video.
- After successful execution of DFU mode, a notification will appear in iTunes that the program has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, click OK and continue with the instructions.
3. Restore
- Now click on the restore button. iTunes will download the firmware image and upload it to your device.
- If you already have a firmware image file (extension .ipsw) saved on your computer, you can use it. Just press the Alt key (on Mac) or the Shift key (on Windows) when clicking the restore button and then select the saved .ipsw file on your computer.
4. Done
- Once the iPhone firmware installation is complete, it's done. Your device is now like new.
If you have any problem with these two guides, feel free to contact us in the comments.
Will this also be done on a PC with win? I know and have tested that restore via DFU mode does not work on Czech Win XP, on Vista and Win 7 restore via DFU works...
I really don't know, I have no way to test it on Win. But I see no reason why it shouldn't work ;).
does it not work on Czech Win XP? it will be some kind of stupidity in the system, right? kick the system or something...
no no, it really doesn't work on XPs. I have also tried it with an iPod touch 2G. I had to install 7mics trial in order to jailbreak.
it works, I've done it several times successfully with 3gs
But watch out for photos if you have synchronized photos from another PC - the backup does not include them. The backup will contain only the photos you took with your iPhone…
It doesn't include that, but it's the same as with music, podcasts, etc. The user then synchronizes them from the computer in the classic way.
This is exactly what I needed, thank you
I would just add to the article for Windows users that manual selection of ipsw can be achieved with the SHIFT key.
Thanks for the reminder :)
Nice tutorial. I'll ask one thing that I'm considering just in connection with getting an iPhone 4. Up until now I've used a Mac Pro as a sync computer, but now I'd like to use a Mac Book. Is there any way to back up what I have now in iP 3G or transfer it from MP to MBP? I have the same iTunes libraries on both computers. Thanks.
I'm not 100% sure, but in theory it would be enough to back up the iPhone to the MP, and copy the address book to the MBP:
~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync
where ~/ is the home directory, to the same directory on the MBP
Of course, turn off iTunes on the MBP before uploading it there. I would say that after starting iTunes you will have the backup there and you can synchronize it on the MBP. You will also have to authorize iTunes on the MBP so that the DRM is caught and the applications work.
Anyway, I don't know if this is enough if you have an encrypted backup, or I don't know if the MBP will ask for a password, but it should.
And would this guide also work for downloading data from iPod touch to iPhone? I mean contacts, calendar, but also application data, game saves, etc.
Yes, everything should work.
If I knew this procedure, I wouldn't have bought the nDrive app, which is no longer on the Appstore and I don't have it on my computer either. Does anyone know what to do with it?
I have such a…. llama question When I use the procedure described above (backup), are my contacts backed up with everything in them (emails, notes, addresses, ...) and Notes? I previously backed up on a PC where Outlook was, now I will do this backup on a PC where Outlook will not be. Does iTunes back up contacts by itself, or does it require a mail program? E.g. it will not offer me synchronization with Microsoft Windows Mail. Thanks for the possibility answers.
He should offer, it wants to have an account set up. But it will happen with those contacts directly in Wokne.
It should include contacts too, just not multimedia content.
…Thanks. I'll try it.
You can also use this free application to back up your contacts if you have Vodafone. Article here: http://jablickar.cz/people-sync-jednoducha-a-rychla-zaloha-iphone-kontaktu/
Hi, I have a question about copying data to an iPhone. I didn't have an iPhone before and now I have an iPhone 4. I had all my contacts synchronized from Nokia and I have them in the Address book and events in the Calendar. Is there any way to copy all contacts from the Macbook directly to the iPhone from the address book? Thanks
Yes, in my opinion it will work. In iTunes there is an option to synchronize contacts with the Address book. So there shouldn't be a problem with that.
yes, thanks, maybe I can find it somewhere in the options or maybe iTunes will load it for me and not delete it for me; that's what I fear the most.
If you still have the original Nokia, it can be used to copy contacts http://phonecopy.com . You upload data from Nokia there, you can also edit it, and then you download Phonecopy for iPhone from the Appstore and transfer the contacts to the iPhone. I did it that way for a 3GS with OS 4.0 and it works.
Thanks for the tip Jirko, we will definitely write about it.
With that point 3 – i.e. restore I would be very careful (if you have an iPhone 3GS)
If you restore to version 4.0.2, reduce the selling price of the phone, because it is not possible to jailbreak under 4.0.2.
Personally, I wouldn't buy an iPhone without the option of jailbreaking even for half the price.
The price of an iPhone does not really depend on whether JB goes for it. despite the fact that many people don't even want it. and it's only a matter of time before it shows up on the net, even if it's possible to partially influence someone that JB can't be given to it then. what would "poor" Apple say about this opinion?
I just want to ask. If I have a jailbreak on my iPhone 3GS and I buy an iPhone 4, will the recovery from the backup take place without any problems? Or should I give the option "Set up as a new iPhone" and then download the required (already purchased) applications in the AppStore out of respect? Sorry for a possibly stupid question, but I don't want to spoil anything....Thanks.
Hello, I bought an Iphone 4 and I already had an Iphone 3g. All the transfer of data, contacts, applications, etc. went without any problems, I gave the older IP 3g to my girlfriend and I have a problem, because both phones have the same name (Jardon's Iphone), my wifi does not work when we are both at home. Is there any possibility to rename the phone? I add that I backup to iTunes on the iMac of each of us under a different user account.
Yes, the phone can be renamed directly in iTunes. After connecting the phone, its name will be displayed on the right. Mark it and then click on it again and you will be able to change the name ;).
I thank you very much for this guide :)...without it I would probably be at my wits end, because I had no previous experience here. So inu- Thanks a lot, perfect tutorial.
I have a similar thematic question, but it concerns 2 PCs and one iPhone
Old backup on XP, new Itunes on w7.
How to transfer apps please?
Thank you for answer.
Great guide, great work, thank you :)
I bought an iPhone 4 and I'm switching to it from an iPhone 3, but I'm worried about the change and switching to a micro card. Is there a solution without data loss? If I replace my original sim card with a micro one, it will be inactive immediately, so I won't extract data from it.
I have a question,
is it possible to transfer photos from iPhone 4 to iPhone 5, so that in the new iPhone these photos would be displayed on the map where they were taken?
