Smartphone screens have grown practically continuously over the past 10 years, until an imaginary ideal point has been reached. In the case of iPhones, 5,8″ appeared to be the best size for the base model. At least that's what the iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone 11 Pro stuck to. However, with the arrival of the iPhone 12 generation, a change came – the basic model, as well as the Pro version, received a 6,1″ display. This diagonal was previously only used in cheaper phones like the iPhone XR/11.
Apple continued with the same setup. Last year's iPhone 13 series is available in exactly the same body and with the same displays. Now we specifically have a choice of 5,4″ mini, 6,1″ base model and the Pro version and 6,7″ Pro Max. A display with a diagonal of 6,1″ can therefore be considered a new standard. Therefore, a rather interesting question began to be resolved among apple growers. Will we ever see a 5,8" iPhone again, or will Apple stick to the recently set "rules" and therefore we shouldn't expect any changes? Let's shed some light on it together.
6,1″ display as the best variant
As we mentioned above, we could see a 6,1″ display in the case of Apple phones even before the arrival of the iPhone 12. The iPhone 11 and iPhone XR offered the same size. At that time, "better" versions with a 5,8" screen were still available. Despite this, the 6,1″ phones were among those best seller – The iPhone XR was the best-selling phone for 2019 and the iPhone 11 for 2020. Then, when the iPhone 12 arrived, it almost immediately attracted a lot of attention and met with slow and unexpected success. Leaving aside that the iPhone 12 was the best-selling phone of 2021, we also have to mention that in the first 7 months since its introduction sold over 100 million units. On the other hand, the mini, Pro and Pro Max models are also included in this statistic.
From the numbers alone, it is clear that iPhones with a 6,1″ screen are simply more popular and sell much better. After all, this was also confirmed in the case of the iPhone 13, which also met with great success. In a way, the popularity of the 6,1" diagonal is confirmed even by apple users themselves. Those on the discussion forums confirm that this is the so-called ideal size, which fits more or less best in the hands. It is precisely on the basis of these theories that we should not count on the arrival of a 5,8″ iPhone. This is also confirmed by the speculation regarding the expected iPhone 14 series. It should also come in a version with a 6,1" screen (iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro), which will also be supplemented by a larger variant with a 6,7" display (iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max).
Do we need a smaller iPhone?
In that case, however, we only have a choice of iPhones whose display diagonal exceeds the 6″ mark. Therefore, another question arises. How will it be with smaller phones, or will we ever see them again? Unfortunately, there is not so much interest in smaller phones globally, which is why Apple is reportedly planning to completely cancel the mini series. The SE model will therefore remain as the only representative of smaller Apple phones. However, the question is which direction he will take next. Do you agree that the 6,1″ is better compared to the 5,8″ models?
If the 6,1″ is better compared to the 5,8″ models? I don't know, it seems like a punch to me... I had an iPhone X (5,8″) and now I have an iPhone 13Pro (6,1″) and it doesn't seem like a big difference to me. Rather, I am unbelievably turned off by how square the new iPhones are, they stick to me like crazy. I wouldn't have even noticed that the display had grown slightly if I hadn't looked at the parameters.
I agree, the new iPhones are really bricks and I have to hold them really hard, and the edges also make me angry.

The iPhone SE 1st generation is probably still a phone and it's not easy to wear a tablet to your ear.
The ideal size is a maximum of 5,5" room phone 13 mini and the edges are top, come in and hold great. Rounded edges are disgusting.
