Although the new iPhone 14 (Pro) series has only just entered the market, speculation is already beginning about possible changes to the next iPhone 15 series. The editor Mark Gurman from the Bloomberg portal came with quite important information, according to which Apple is preparing to partially unify its branding, which it can be a little confusing for some at the moment. According to these speculations, the Cupertino giant is to come up with a brand new phone – the iPhone 15 Ultra – which will apparently replace the current Pro Max model.

At first glance, such a change appears to be minimal, when it is practically just a change of name. Unfortunately, this is not the case, at least not according to current information. Apple is about to make a slightly more radical change and breathe new life into the iPhone product line. In general, it could be said that it would thus be closer to the competition. However, an interesting discussion quickly opened up. Is this step correct? Alternatively, why should Apple stick to its current ruts?

iPhone 15 Ultra or goodbye to compact flagships

As we have already mentioned above, a fairly sharp discussion has opened up among Apple fans about the arrival of the iPhone 15 Ultra. This model should not only replace the iPhone Pro Max, but also take the position of the truly best iPhone. So far, Apple has not only endowed its Pro Max models with a larger display or battery, but also improved the camera, for example, and overall kept the differences between the Pro and Pro Max models to a minimum. This made the two products very similar. According to current speculation, however, this is to end, as the only truly "professional" model is to be the iPhone 15 Ultra.

It is therefore not surprising that apple growers expressed their disapproval almost immediately. With this move, Apple would say goodbye to compact flagships. The Cupertino giant is one of the few mobile phone manufacturers that brings its high-end models, i.e. the aforementioned flagships, even in a compact size. In that case, we are of course talking about the iPhone 14 Pro. It has the same display diagonal as the basic iPhone 14, although it offers all the functions and even a more powerful chipset. So, if the current speculations were to be confirmed and Apple really came up with the iPhone 15 Ultra, there would be a significantly larger gap between it and the iPhone 15 Pro. Those interested would have only one option left – if they wanted the best of the best, they would have to settle for a significantly larger body.

Competitive approach

Everyone has to judge individually whether it is appropriate to make such distinctions. However, the truth is that the current approach has a rather fundamental advantage. Apple fans can find the "best iPhone" even in a smaller, more compact size, or choose between a smaller or a larger model. A larger phone is not necessarily suitable for everyone. On the other hand, this kind of approach has been used by the competition for a long time. This is typical for Samsung, for example, whose true flagship, currently bearing the name Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, is only available in a version with a 6,8″ display. Would you welcome this approach in the case of Apple phones or should Apple not change it?
