Macs are doing fairly well these days. We have an extensive range of both portable and desktop models available, which have a pleasing design and fully sufficient performance, thanks to which they can be used both for ordinary work or surfing the Internet, as well as for demanding operations, which include video editing, work with 3D, development and more. But it was not always like that, on the contrary. Until relatively recently, Apple was literally at the bottom with its Mac computers and tasted a lot of criticism, albeit deserved.

In 2016, Apple started interesting changes that first manifested themselves in the world of Apple laptops. A completely new, significantly thinner design arrived, the familiar connectors disappeared, which Apple replaced with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, a very strange butterfly keyboard appeared, and so on. Even a Mac Pro was not the best. While today this model can handle a first-class job and can be upgraded thanks to its modularity, this was not the case before. It is therefore not surprising that someone made a flower pot out of it.

Apple also assured journalists

Criticism of Apple was not the least then, which is why the giant held an internal meeting exactly five years ago, or rather in 2017, to which it invited a number of reporters. And it was at this point that he apologized to pro Mac users and tried to reassure everyone that he was back on track. One step also hints at the magnitudes of these problems. As such, Apple always tries to keep all information about yet-to-be-presented products under wraps. He therefore tries to protect the various prototypes as much as possible and takes a number of measures aimed at ensuring maximum secrecy. But he made an exception at this point, telling reporters that he is currently working on a completely redesigned modular Mac Pro, meaning the 2019 model, a professional iMac and a new professional display (Pro Display XDR).

Craig Federighi, who participated in the meeting, even admitted that they drove themselves into a "thermal corner". By this, he was understandably alluding to the cooling problems of the Macs of that time, due to which they were not even able to use their full potential. Fortunately, the problems slowly began to disappear and apple users were once again happy with apple computers. The first step in the right direction was 2019, when we saw the introduction of Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR. But these products are not enough by themselves, as they are aimed exclusively at professionals, which, by the way, is also reflected in their price. This year we still got the 16″ MacBook Pro, which solved all the annoying problems. Apple finally abandoned the highly defective butterfly keyboard, redesigned the cooling, and after years brought a laptop to the market that was truly worthy of the Pro designation.

Apple Silicon and the new era of Macs

The turning point was 2020, and as you all know, that's when Apple Silicon took the floor. In June 2020, on the occasion of the developer conference WWDC 2020, Apple announced the transition from Intel processors to its own solution. At the end of the year, we still got a trio of Macs with the first M1 chip, thanks to which it managed to take many people's breath away. With this, he practically started a new era of apple computers. The Apple Silicon chip is available today in MacBook Air, Mac mini, 13″ MacBook Pro, 24″ iMac, 14″/16″ MacBook Pro and the brand new Mac Studio, which has the most powerful Apple Silicon chip M1 Ultra.

At the same time, Apple also learned from previous shortcomings. For example, the 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro already have a slightly thicker body, so they shouldn’t have the slightest problem with cooling (Apple Silicon chips are more energy efficient in themselves), and most importantly, some connectors have also returned. Specifically, Apple introduced MagSafe 3, an SD card reader and an HDMI port. For now, it looks like the Cupertino giant managed to bounce back from the imaginary bottom. If things continue like this, we can count on the fact that in the coming years we will see almost perfect devices.
