Even before the advent of iCloud, synchronization via a Google account was an interesting alternative to MobileMe, which, unlike this service, was free. We wrote about Google account options in earlier article. But now iCloud is here, which is also free and works great, so why not use it?

Probably the most important items to synchronize are the calendar and contacts, while the calendar was easy to synchronize via Google, it was more complicated with Contacts and it didn't always work perfectly. So we want to move to iCloud, but how do we do it while keeping the old data?

Kalendář

  • First, you need to add an iCloud account. If iCal doesn't prompt you to do so on startup, you need to add the account manually. Via the menu in the top bar iCal -> Preferences (Preferences) we get to the settings accounts (Showcase) and using the + button under the list of accounts, we call up the menu where we select iCloud. Then just fill in your Apple ID and password (it matches your iTunes credentials).
  • Now you need to export the current calendar from Google (or another account). Click on the menu Calendars in the upper left corner, a menu of calendars from your account will appear. Right-click on the calendar you want to export and select from the context menu Export… (Export…)

  • Now you just need to choose where the exported file will be saved. Remember this location.
  • Select in the top menu File -> Import -> Import… (File -> Import -> Import…) and select the file you exported a while ago.
  • iCal will ask us which calendar we want to add the data to, we select one of the iCloud calendars
  • At the moment we have two calendars with identical dates, so we can safely delete the Google account (iCal -> Preferences -> Accounts, with the "-") button

Contact

With contacts, it's a little more complicated. This is because if you did not choose an account for synchronization with Google as the default, the newly saved contacts on the iDevice were only stored internally and were not synchronized with Google contacts. If this is your case, I recommend using a free app, for example PhoneCopy, which is available for Mac, iPhone and iPad. Back up your contacts to the server on your iPhone, and then sync them from the server to your computer on your Mac. This should get all the contacts created into your Address Book.

  • If necessary, add an iCloud account similar to the calendar. for iCloud, check account activation and On My Mac (On My Mac) tick off Synchronize with Google (or with Yahoo)
  • In the tab In general (Generalv preferences select iCloud as the default account.
  • Export contacts via the menu File -> Export -> Directory Archive. (File -> Export ->Addressbook Archive)
  • Now through the menu File -> Import (File -> Import) select the archive you created. The application will ask if you want to overwrite the contacts. Overwrite them, this will keep them in your iCloud account.
  • Now just select v on the iDevice Settings sync contacts via iCloud and you're done.

The instructions are intended for OSX Lion 10.7.2 a iOS 5
