The native TextEdit application on the Mac is used to open and edit RTF documents created in other applications. In the next few parts of our series on native Apple applications, we will focus on TextEdit, while in the first part we will discuss the absolute basics.

You can create documents in TextEdit in plain or rich text format. In the case of a formatted document, you can apply a number of modifications to the text, such as different styles or alignment, while in the case of plain text documents, no such modifications are possible. On your Mac, launch TextEdit - create a new file by clicking File -> New in the toolbar at the top of the screen. After opening the document, you can start writing immediately, saving is done continuously automatically. To add document properties, click File -> View Properties on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and then enter the necessary information. To create a PDF document, choose File -> Export as PDF.

In TextEdit on Mac, you can also edit and view HTML documents as you would a regular web browser. On the toolbar at the top of the screen, click File -> New, then again on the toolbar, choose Format -> Convert to Plain Text. Enter the HTML code, click File -> Save and enter a file name with a .html extension. To view the file, click File -> Open, select the appropriate document, and at the bottom of the TextEdit dialog, click Options and select the "Ignore Formatting Commands" option. Then click Open.
