In today's installment of our regular series on native Apple apps, we'll take a final look at Preview on the Mac. This time we will discuss in more detail how to combine PDF files, compress them and add effects.

Combining PDF files in Preview on Mac is not difficult. As you work, however, keep in mind that changes are saved automatically, so before merging each PDF file, save each one by clicking File -> Duplicate on the toolbar at the top of your Mac's screen. Then open all the files you want to link in Preview and click View -> Thumbnails on the toolbar at the top of the screen. Then drag the thumbnails you want to add to the thumbnail sidebar in the second PDF. As usual, you can change the order of the thumbnails by dragging them on the sidebar. To add an entire PDF file to the beginning or end of another file, you can drag its icon from the Finder to the sidebar.

You can also conveniently compress PDF files in Preview on Mac. On the toolbar at the top of the screen, click File -> Export. Then click Quartz filter and choose Reduce file size. You can also add filters to PDF files in Preview on Mac. The path to them is again by clicking on File -> Export on the toolbar at the top of the Mac screen. Here, choose the Quart filter and choose the desired effect.
