The native Photos app is used on Mac to import, save, manage and basic edit your photos and images. In the following parts of our series on native applications, we will focus on Photos, the first part will be dedicated to importing photos.

Images can be imported into the Photos application using iCloud, by synchronizing your iOS or iPadOS device with a Mac, from a digital camera or any mobile device, but also from external drives or other applications. To import photos from a digital camera, iPhone, or iPad, first connect the device to your Mac. Start the Photos application and in the panel on the left in the Device section, select the appropriate location - the application will display all photos located on the given device. If you want the Photos app to open every time you connect that device, check the "Launch Photos" box.

If you want to choose a place to save the imported images, click Import destination and select either one of the existing albums, or choose New album, enter its name and confirm by clicking OK. You can either import all new photos, or click to select only certain photos. But you can also convert classic photos to native Photos - just have an iPhone or iPad handy. Right-click on your Mac's desktop and choose Import from iPhone or iPad -> Take a Scan. With the help of your iOS or iPadOS device, take a scan of a classic photo and then import it from the desktop to Photos in the usual way. To import photos from a third-party mobile device, simply connect the device to your computer with a cable and drag the photos to your computer's hard drive in the Finder. Then drag the images from the Finder to the Photos application, or to its icon in the Dock. Another option is to launch the Photos app, click File -> Import on the toolbar at the top of the screen, and select the content you want to import.

To import from an external drive or similar storage device, connect it to your computer and in the Photos app, click File -> Import in the toolbar at the top of the screen. Select the items you want to import and click Check Import. Choose a location for your photos and import. You can also import photos and videos from email, Messages, or web pages in Safari into native Photos. If you're importing from Mail, open the message that contains the desired photo. Then drag them from the e-mail to the Photos application, or hold down the Ctrl key, click on the photos and choose Share -> Add to Photos. To import from another email application, Ctrl-click each photo and select the option to save. Then launch Photos and click File -> Import on the toolbar at the top of the screen. Select the images you want to import and choose Check Import. To import a photo from an e-mail on the web, open the corresponding message. If you're using Safari, hold down the Ctrl key, click the image in the email, and choose Add Image to Photos. For other browsers, hold down the Ctrl key, click on the photo in the message, and select the save command. Then launch the Photos app, click File -> Import on the bar at the top of the screen and select the image to import.

To import photos from the Messages app, open the message with the photo you want to import and drag the image from Messages to the Photos app window or to its icon in the Dock. You can import a photo from a webpage in Safari in the same way.
