There is no doubt about the usefulness of the ECG function on the newer Apple Watch models. But now it is also officially confirmed that the information that the watch provides within this function is true and accurate. A study involving more than 400 volunteers showed that the Apple Watch does not provide its wearers with false information regarding atrial fibrillation and potentially dangerous conditions.

The study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, lasted a full eight months. During this time, a total of 2161 of its participants were alerted by their watches to the occurrence of atrial fibrillation. These people were sent to record a full ECG recording. He indeed confirmed the symptoms of fibrillation in 84% of them, while in 34% cardiac problems were detected. Although it is not XNUMX% reliable, the study is proof that the ECG function will not provide Apple Watch owners with false warnings about possible atrial fibrillation.

When Apple famously introduced the ECG function on the Apple Watch Series 4, it was met with skepticism from professional circles and concerns that the function would not cause panic among users with possible false reports and drive them to specialist doctors' offices unnecessarily. It was precisely these fears that the mentioned study was supposed to either confirm or dispel.

The study concluded that the chance of getting a false irregular heart rate alert is low with the Apple Watch. The study did not report the number of participants who had atrial fibrillation that was not detected by the watch. The recommendation from the aforementioned study is clear – if your Apple Watch alerts you to the possibility of atrial fibrillation, see a doctor.
