Apple fans have been debating for a long time about the news that could be expected from Apple AirPods headphones. Of course, the most common talk is about the overall improvement of sound or battery life. After all, these are some of the most important features. However, the entire development could move several steps further. According to newly available information, Apple is toying with the idea of a complete redesign of the charging case.

Already in September 2021, Apple registered a rather interesting patent, the publication of which took place only recently. In it, he then describes and illustrates the redesigned charging case, the front of which is then decorated with a touch screen, designed to control headphones, playback and other options. It is therefore not surprising that this news attracted a considerable amount of attention. However, this brings us to a very fundamental question. Although such an improvement looks quite interesting, the question is whether we need it at all.

What AirPods with a display will offer

Before moving on to the mentioned question, let's quickly summarize what the display could actually be used for. Apple directly describes several possible scenarios in the text of the patent. Accordingly, it could be used, for example, to control the playback of Apple Music, which would also be complemented by the so-called tap response. Without taking out the phone, apple users could completely control the entire playback, from the volume, through individual songs, to the activation of the active sound suppression modes or the throughput mode. In the same way, there could be support for Siri activation, or the implementation of other chips that would enrich AirPods with native applications such as Calendar, Mail, Phone, News, Weather, Maps and others.

Do AirPods need a touchscreen?

Now to the most important thing. Do AirPods need a touchscreen? As we mentioned above, at first glance, this is a perfect improvement that will noticeably expand the overall capabilities of Apple's wireless headphones. In the end, however, such an extension does not make complete sense. As such, we usually don't take out the charging case and keep it hidden, mostly in the pocket where the iPhone is also located. In this direction, we encounter a very fundamental problem. Why should an Apple user reach for an AirPods charging case and then deal with their affairs through its smaller display, when they can just as easily pull out the entire phone, which is a significantly more comfortable solution in this regard.

In practice, AirPods with their own touch screen are no longer that useful, quite the opposite. In the end, it can be a more or less unnecessary improvement that will not find its use among apple growers. In the final, however, it can turn out exactly the opposite - when such a change becomes hugely popular. In that case, however, Apple would have to bring even more changes. For example, Apple fans would like to see if the Apple company also enriched the case with data storage. In a way, AirPods could become a multimedia player, similar to an iPod, which could function independently of the iPhone. Athletes, for example, could appreciate this. They would completely do without their phone during exercise or training and would be fine with just headphones. How do you view such a potential novelty?
