The iPhone SE has enjoyed immense popularity since its arrival. The very first model was shown to the world back in 2016, when Apple presented a phone in the body of the popular iPhone 5S, which, however, had significantly more modern components. This is exactly what set the trend for SE products. It consists of a combination of an already captured design and newer internals. It didn't take long and other models were born, the last, third generation, in 2022.

Apple fans have been speculating for a long time about when we will see the 4th generation iPhone SE, or whether Apple is even planning one. Although even a year ago there were frequent speculations about relatively fundamental changes, they were subsequently abandoned and, on the contrary, we began to discuss whether we will actually ever see this phone again. Its total cancellation is also in play. So let's focus on a very important topic. Does the world need an iPhone SE 4?

Do we even need an iPhone SE?

As we have already mentioned above, in this direction, an extremely important question arises, namely whether we need the iPhone SE at all. The SE model is a certain compromise between older design and functions and better performance. This is also the main strength of these products. They clearly excel in the price/performance ratio, which makes them an extremely interesting choice for undemanding users. The devices are significantly cheaper. This can be directly seen when comparing the price of the basic iPhone 14GB, which will cost you CZK 128, and the current iPhone SE 26 490GB, for which Apple charges CZK 3. The popular "SEčko" is thus almost twice as cheap. For some users, it can be an obvious choice.

On the other hand, the truth is that the popularity of smaller phones is declining over time. This was perfectly demonstrated by the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini, which were a complete flop in sales. In the same way, the popularity of the current iPhone SE 3 is also declining. However, it may be due to the absence of major changes - the model came relatively shortly after its predecessor, i.e. in two years, when it retained the completely same design (originally from the iPhone 8) and bet only for newer chipset and 5G support. Let's pour some clear wine, it doesn't have to be a big attraction for upgrading, especially in our Czech Republic, where the 5G network may not be so widespread, or customers may be severely limited by expensive data tariffs.

It is therefore not surprising that a discussion has opened about whether the once so popular "SEčko" still makes sense. If we look at it through the lens of the current situation, then one can lean towards the fact that there is no more room for the iPhone SE in the market. At least that's how it looks now, especially considering the diminutive popularity of smaller phones. But in the long run, it doesn't have to be like that, on the contrary. The prices of Apple phones rose substantially last year and this trend can be expected to continue. With this situation in mind, it is so likely that apple growers will think twice about whether they want to invest in a new generation or not. And it's at this point that the iPhone SE 4 can be a shot in the arm. If users are interested in a really high-quality phone, preferably an iPhone, then the iPhone SE model would be a clear choice. This is precisely because of the aforementioned price/performance ratio. There has also been speculation in the community whether the SE could eventually be available for the price of a traditional iPhone, given the aforementioned price increase, which would noticeably sway people's preferences.

An ideal choice for undemanding users

It is also important to take into account the fact that some may not reach for the iPhone SE purely because of its lower price. As we already indicated above, this is a perfect entry-level model into the Apple ecosystem, which can come in handy for users who don't use the phone that much, or who only use it for basic purposes. We would find a number of people for whom their Mac is their primary device and they rarely use their iPhone. In order to fully benefit from the Apple ecosystem, they simply cannot do without an iPhone. It is precisely in this direction that SE makes perfect sense.

If we take into account all the mentioned situations, then it is obvious that the iPhone SE 4 can play a rather important role in the near future. Therefore, its cancellation might not be the best move. At the same time, the question is when we will actually see this phone and what changes it will bring. If we go back to the very initial speculations and leaks, they mentioned the removal of the iconic home button, the deployment of the display across the entire front panel (following the model of newer iPhones) and the possible deployment of Touch ID in the power button, as is the case with the iPad Air, for example. Big question marks also hang over whether Apple will eventually decide to deploy an OLED panel.
