It is decided. An eight-member jury has just handed down a verdict in renewed process between Apple and Samsung and ordered the South Korean company to pay Apple 290 million dollars (5,9 billion crowns) in damages. Samsung was convicted of copying the California company's patented software and design...

It all started last August, when Samsung was convicted of patent infringement and fined a fine exceeding one billion dollars. However, Judge Lucy Koh eventually reduced that amount to less than $600 million because she was convinced there had been a mistake in the jury's calculations. About 450 million, by which Kohová reduced the original amount, was therefore discussed again.

That's why the whole process started a second time last week, for a new jury to once again go through the evidence and calculate a new amount that Samsung should compensate Apple for the damages it caused. Apple in a new process demanded $379 million, with Samsung countering that it is only willing to pay 52 million.

The resulting $290 million, which the jury decided today after two days of deliberation, is almost a hundred million less than Apple demanded, but on the other hand, significantly more than Samsung was willing to pay, which also admitted that it had in fact infringed some patents.

At the moment, Samsung owes Apple a total of 929 million dollars for copying its products, the original decision with a reduced fine of 599 million dollars is still valid, and in addition to this, in April of this year, an additional 40 million dollars was added to it, which Apple obtained from another patent dispute including the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Representatives of both sides now have time to react, and it is almost clear that today's verdict will not end the case. Samsung is expected to withdraw immediately, and Apple is likely to make the same move.

Apple has already managed to provide a statement to the server All Things D:

For Apple, this case has always been about more than patents and money. It was about the motivation and hard work we put into creating products that people love. It is not possible to put a price tag on such values, but we are grateful to the jury for showing Samsung that copying costs something.

[do action=”update” date=”25. 11.”]The total amount that Samsung must compensate Apple for damages ends up not being $889 million, but $40 million more. These were attributed to Apple in April of this year as part of another patent dispute concerning the Samsung Galaxy S II device.
