At the same time, a discussion is being opened about the possible return of the Covid-19 pandemic and therefore also about the mandatory wearing of masks or respirators. Fortunately, Apple is more than ready for their return!
The issue of Face ID and masks
When the global pandemic first hit and masks and respirators became mandatory almost worldwide, iPhone users with Face ID paid a noticeable price. Face ID works on the basis of a 3D scan of the face, which of course was not possible because it was covered by the aforementioned mask. We suddenly lost one of the main advantages of newer iPhones and had to switch to a more lengthy, but proven method - manual code writing.
Fortunately, Apple was not idle and set about solving this shortcoming. This came along with the update iOS 15.4. Since this version, Face ID is fully functional even in cases where you have a mask or respirator on. However, there is one condition. Face ID is functional only on iPhone 12 and later, specifically on iPhone 12 (Pro), iPhone 13 (Pro) and iPhone 14 (Pro). Users with older iPhones are unfortunately out of luck due to the older Face ID module, which in such cases is not able to provide secure authentication.
How to set up Face ID with a mask
So if you own an iPhone 12 and later with the iOS 15.4 operating system, then Face ID in combination with a mask or respirator will work for you. But keep in mind that the function needs to be set. Open therefore Settings > Face ID and code, where you have to authenticate yourself via a code lock. Then just scroll down and use the slider to activate the option Face ID with mask. In this situation, a wizard will open asking for a second scan of the face without the mask. If you have a brand new iPhone in your hand with Face ID not yet set up, the system will ask you after the initial scan if you wish to activate this function and, if so, ask you to scan your face a second time.

However, we must not forget to mention one rather important fact. If you would like to unlock the iPhone using Face ID with the mask on, you need to look directly at the iPhone. Otherwise, the phone simply won't open. In such a case, the Face ID system can perform authentication based on a scan of the unique details around the user's eyes.
Face ID with glasses
The iOS 15.4 update also brought improvements for Apple users who wear glasses. The system may not work properly with glasses and a face mask on, so there is no shortage of options Add glasses, which is located right below the aforementioned slider for activation Face ID with mask. In that case, the iPhone will take another scan of your face, this time with the glasses on. In any case, Apple warns that Face ID does not work in combination with a mask and sunglasses.

How to solve problems with the Face ID module
But what to do if you have problems with the Face ID module itself? This problem is generally referred to as one of the most serious, because for security reasons it is not possible to simply replace one module with another, or not everyone can handle this task. Nevertheless, a solution is offered.
