Last Friday, Samsung started selling its latest smartwatch, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro, alongside the basic version of the Galaxy Buds2 Pro headphones and the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Z Fold4 foldable phone duo. Even if they try hard, even if they use premium materials, the Galaxy Watch will never be an Apple Watch.

Samsung's effort to provide premium quality to its smartwatches is to be commended considering its competition. If the Galaxy Watch is to be an alternative to the Apple Watch for Android, they certainly succeed, and for a relatively reasonable price tag. For the price of the aluminum Apple Watch Series 7 with an ordinary silicone strap, you get clearly more - titanium, sapphire and a flip-up titanium buckle of their strap.

In the new series, Samsung managed to increase the performance, which we may also see in the Apple Watch Series 8, so the current watch actually has the same chip as the previous generation. However, it doesn't matter, because in the year that the Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic have been on the market, they haven't hit their limits in any way. For the Pro model, the South Korean manufacturer focused precisely on exclusivity in the form of their resistance and durability. But it has several buts.

Design rules

While we can argue about the extent to which Google and Samsung have copied watchOS in their Wear OS, Samsung is in a league of its own in everything else. His watch is therefore based on the classic "round" appearance and it doesn't matter, because the system is tuned accordingly. Perhaps there was too much inspiration, especially with regard to the strap. But not with Apple.

In the watch industry, silicone straps that are tightened all the way to the case are quite common. However, these are mostly premium brands that offer it, because this belt has its own rules - it does not fit every hand. Yes, it looks good and fancy, but for a device meant for the masses, it's grossly inappropriate. Although it is relatively comfortable, it simply sticks out too much at the edge of the hand, which actually makes an inappropriate impression on those who are weaker.

But the flip-up clasp is not at all usual. In addition, with the use of a silicone strap, you can adjust it absolutely perfectly. You do not make the hole more or less, you simply move the clasp. So even if the case strap does not fit your hand, the watch will not fall off. The clasp is also magnetic, when the magnets are sufficiently strong. So it's absolutely great for a developed wrist, not so much for my 17,5 cm diameter. The height of the case is also to blame.

Questionable values

And here it is again, Samsung is the master of fogging. For the Galaxy Watch5 Pro model, it states their height as 10,5 mm, but completely ignores the lower sensor module. In addition, it is almost 5 mm, so in the final sum the watch has a height of 15,07 mm, which is really a lot. Apple claims a height of 7mm for its Apple Watch Series 10,7. Samsung could get rid of the unnecessary overhang of the display edging, which, although it looks nice, unnecessarily increases the thickness, optically reduces the display and vainly refers to the absence of a physical bezel. And there's the weight.

The watch is titanium, and titanium is heavier than aluminum but lighter than steel. So compared to the 45mm aluminum Apple Watch, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro is really heavy. These are weights of 38,8 g vs. 46,5 g. Of course, it's all about habit. The weight doesn't feel so good in your hand, it does. However, those used to heavy steel bulbs will be fine with this one. To top it off – the titanium Apple Watch weighs 45,1g.

So, Samsung has delivered a potential bestseller to the market with the Galaxy Watch5 Pro. Its functions, materials used, exclusive appearance and ideal diameter of 45 mm are impressive. Then of course there is the staying power which should last 3 days. It's not an Apple Watch, and it never will be. Samsung is going its own way and that's a good thing. But maybe it's a shame that it insists on not being able to pair them with iPhones, even though Wear OS can communicate with them. Many who are already bored with the same yet iconic look of the Apple Watch might like to try something new.
