With the start of sales of the new iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, the highest model of the series, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, arrived at our editorial office. But since we have been using the iPhone 13 Pro Max for a year, we can offer you a direct comparison of their forms and certain differences.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max arrived in its new space black color, which is sleeker and darker than space gray. Black is mainly the frame, while the frosted glass back is still gray. Many compare this variant to Jet Black, which was available with the iPhone 7. As for the frame, it could be said that there is indeed a similarity here, but the whole looks very different. We then have the iPhone 13 Pro Max in mountain blue, which was exclusive to last year's series and this year was replaced by dark purple.

When Apple last year bet on black boxes with a picture of the back of the device, now we see it again from the front. This is to show the company its new element – Dynamic Island. What color option you are holding in your hand is only told by the wallpaper, according to which it is not completely obvious, and the color of the frame (together with the description on the bottom of the box). However, we brought you unboxing news in a separate article.

Dimensions

Even if you have a direct comparison between the two devices, you will not recognize the difference in that the novelty has slightly different body proportions and is heavier. This is, of course, because the measurements have been adjusted really only decently, and you don't have a chance to feel the extra two grams either.

  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: 160,8 x 78,1 x 7,65mm, 238g
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 160,7 x 77,6 x 7,85mm, 240g

Both iPhones have the same placement of antenna shielding, the position and size of the volume rocker and buttons are also the same. The SIM card slot is already below, as is the power button. It doesn't really matter for the first one, it's good for the second one. So you don't have to stretch your thumb so much to press the button. Apple seems to have realized that people with smaller hands use large phones.

Cameras

I'm quite curious to see how far Apple wants to go, and when they'll decide that it's really too much. It was really a lot last year, but this year's photo module is again of higher quality, but also bigger and more demanding on space. The individual lenses are therefore not only larger in terms of their diameter, but they protrude even more from the back of the device.

Apple relates the stated thickness to the surface of the device, i.e. between the display and the back. But the photo module in the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a total thickness (measured from the display) of 11 mm, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is already 12 mm. And a millimeter on top is not an insignificant number. Of course, the protruding photo module has two main ailments - the device wobbles on the table because of it and catches a really large amount of dirt, which is more noticeable on darker colors. After all, you can see it in the present photos. We really tried to clean both devices, but it is not easy.

Display

Of course, the main one is Dynamic Island, which is simply great both visually and functionally. And when third-party developers adopt it, it will be even better. You enjoy looking at it, you enjoy using it, because it's just something different that we're not used to. Compared to it, where there is still a certain enthusiasm, the situation is different with the always-on display. Because I don't enjoy Always On.

Not only does it not look nice, even terrible with the system splash wallpaper, but it is too bright and distracting. With the display of important information, it is also a misery. We'll see how long the testing is. I definitely appreciate a more decent speaker as well.
