The introduction of iPhone 11 is basically around the corner. The Keynote is less than a fortnight away. Together with the premiere of new models, however, current models will lose up to a third of their value.

Just like every year, new iPhone models reach their first owners. This year's eleven will thus replace the current iPhone XS, XS Max and XR portfolio. Their value will drop by up to 30%. Does it make sense to sell them and how does the value develop over time?

The server brought interesting data Decluttr. He deals, among other things, with the sale of refurbished equipment. In his analysis, he processed data from several generations of iPhones. In the case of newer ones, they then evaluated as a percentage how quickly they lose their value.

iPhone XS, XS Max and XR will experience the biggest price drop within 24 hours of the Apple Keynote. According to the statistical data of the server, it will be up to 30% as their current owners prepare to sell and buy a new model.

The models then lose value continuously, but not by such a drastic jump. According to the results, it is an average of 1% per month. Next year in September, for example, the iPhone XR will have a 43% lower sales value than it has today.

Consumer electronics depreciate rapidly at first

The server also provided data on the current range of phones and indicated their loss of value according to current statistics (for the release of the Apple Keynote with iPhone 11, September 10, 2019):

  • iPhone 7 will lose 81% of its value
  • iPhone 8 will lose 65% of its value
  • iPhone 8+ will lose 61% of its value
  • iPhone X will lose 59% of its value
  • iPhone XS will lose 49% of its value
  • iPhone XR will lose 43% of its value

If the numbers seem high to you, then the competition is even worse by a few percent. Similar data was observed for the popular Android manufacturer Samsung (data for the release of the next generation of the Galaxy series):

  • The S7 will lose 91% of its value
  • The S8 will lose 82% of its value
  • The S8+ will lose 81% of its value
  • The S9 will lose 77% of its value
  • The S9+ will lose 73% of its value
  • The S10 will lose 57% of its value
  • The S10+ will lose 52% of its value

Of course, this process happens every year and consumer electronics gradually become obsolete. If you want to sell your iPhone at a good price, now is the time. However, if you belong to the group of users who stick with their devices for several years, then the pace of obsolescence is much slower and the price fluctuations are smaller.
