The longer some of us use our Mac, the quicker and easier it is for the desktop to fill up with lots of items, and after a while it can become quite cluttered. There are more ways to clean up your Mac desktop - in today's article we will show some of them.

Sorting

If you don't want to remove any of the items on your Mac's desktop, but you still want to clean it up a bit, you can use the sorting function, which automatically sorts the items on the desktop according to the criteria you specify. There is nothing easier than simply right-clicking on the desktop, selecting Sort by and selecting the desired criteria.

Grid

This step will surely be familiar to most of you, but we will still remind you of it. Similar to sorting by criteria, it's useful when you just want to compare items on your Mac's desktop and not perform any other operations on them. Again, just right-click on the desktop and select Sort by -> Align to grid in the menu that appears. If you have icons scattered on your desktop, nothing will happen the first time. But as soon as you move one with the cursor and let go, it will automatically align according to the imaginary grid, and in this way you can "clean up" all the icons on the desktop.

Cleaning into folders

If you want to minimize the number of objects on the desktop of your Mac, but at the same time you also want to click through to them from the desktop at any time, you can quickly and easily tidy them up into folders. The easiest way is to mark selected items with the mouse cursor. Then right-click the created selection, select New folder with selection and finally name the folder.

The macOS operating system has also offered the ability to use sets for some time. This feature is available in macOS Mojave and later, and grouping is where items on your Mac's desktop are automatically grouped by type into sets. Activating the kits is again not difficult – just like in the previous steps, just right-click on the Mac desktop and select Use Kits.

Hide desktop content in Terminal

Another way to free up space on the desktop is to hide the contents of the desktop using a specific command in the Terminal. This will empty your desktop, and if you want to access the items on it, you'll have to do so through the Finder. To see the contents of the desktop, start the Terminal and enter the command defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop false; killall Finder . Then press Enter. However, we do not recommend this command as a permanent solution, as it limits the feasibility of some actions on the desktop. To revert, enter the same command, just use a value instead of "false".
"true".
