Pixelmator 3.5 includes a new Quick Selection Tool, whose algorithm the developers have been working on for over half a year in an effort to bring users a "next-generation tool." The update will also please frequent OS X users of the Photos application, as it has an extension for it.

"We wanted to create a completely unique object selection experience," Simonas Bastys, head of Pixelmator's development team, says of the new Quick Selection Tool. Therefore, they created an algorithm using "advanced machine learning techniques to find the best way to select objects on its own." To detect the object the user wants to select, the new tool analyzes the colors, texture, contrast, and shadows and highlights in the image. The result should be quick and accurate selection with a simple brush stroke.

The second new tool, the Magnetic Selection Tool, also applies to selecting objects in images. The latter follows the edges of the object traversed by the cursor and attaches a selection line to them. Its reliability should be ensured by the fact that it is based on the A* Pathfinding algorithm.

Another novelty is not directly part of the separate Pixelmator application. It only appears when working with the system Photos application. OS X, just like newer versions of iOS, can work with so-called extensions, i.e. the tool palette of a certain application that can be used in another application.

In this case, that means the “Pixelmator Retouch” toolbar is available in the Photos app. This will allow you to work with some Pixelmator tools, such as removing objects, cloning selected surfaces, adjusting saturation and sharpening, without the need to have the Pixelmator application running. "Pixelmator Retouch" uses Metal, Apple's hardware-accelerated graphics API, to run.

Other new features include little things like a multi-speed "Stroke" effect, automatic brush size adjustment when working with the "Distort" extension, and context-sensitive selection adjustments with the color picker, paint can, and magic eraser.

The update is free for all existing Pixelmator users, others can purchase the app in the Mac App Store for 30 euros.
