If you don't have much time during the day to follow the news that is happening in the world of IT, and you are currently going to bed to be ready for the next day, then our daily summary from the world of information technology will come in handy. We haven't forgotten about you today either, and in this roundup we'll take a look at the new version of Parallels Desktop, then two news on the social network Twitter, and then how Belarus decided to turn off, i.e. limit, the Internet in its country.

Parallels Desktop 16 with macOS Big Sur support is here

If you use a virtual machine with the Windows or perhaps Linux operating system for your daily work on a Mac or MacBook and you have updated to macOS 11 Big Sur, then you have most likely already encountered the problems that some virtualization programs have with the new macOS. The first to report these problems was VMware, whose users began to complain that the mentioned program could not be used in the latest macOS Catalina update. As part of the third beta version of macOS 11 Big Sur, Parallels Desktop 15 also had similar problems, which had to be started using a special command in Terminal for compatibility reasons. Parallels Desktop developers have certainly not rested on their laurels and have been working in the background on the brand new Parallels Desktop 16, which now comes with full support for macOS Big Sur.

However, the new Parallels Desktop in version 16 offers much more than just macOS Big Sur support. It should be noted that the entire application had to be completely redesigned, due to the limitations that Apple came up with in macOS Big Sur. The developers of the brand new Parallels Desktop say that it runs twice as fast while also reporting a 20% increase in performance when using DirectX. Performance improvements also await users within OpenGL 3. In addition to performance improvements, Parallels Desktop 16 also comes with support for multi-touch gestures, for example for zooming in and out or rotating. In addition, users have also received improvements to the interface for printing in Windows, which offers expanded options. There is also a great feature that allows the excess and unused space used by Parallels Desktop to be automatically removed after the virtual machine is shut down, saving storage space. There is also support for travel mode in Windows, thanks to which you can significantly extend battery life. Parallels Desktop 16 then also received a light redesign and many other features.

Twitter is testing new features

If a social network does not want to fall behind the others, it must constantly develop and test new functions. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, but also, for example, Twitter, regularly come up with new functions. It is the last-named social network, and therefore its developers, that are currently working with two new functions. The first feature should deal with the automatic translation of tweets. However, this is not a classic translation function - specifically, it only translates languages that the user is unlikely to know. Twitter is currently testing this feature with a small group of Brazilian users who, starting today, have the option to have all posts displayed in Brazilian Portuguese, after being translated from English. Gradually, this function should be further developed and, for example, for Czech users there could be automatic translation from Chinese, etc. All users will have a simple option to display the post in the original language, together with the setting of which language should be automatically translated. For now, it is not clear when or if we will even see a public release of this feature.

The second feature has already passed the testing phase and is currently rolling out to all Twitter users. Already at the beginning of the year, a function was tested within this social network, with which you could set who can reply to your posts. Even before you send the tweet, you can easily set whether all users will be able to reply, or users you follow or users you mentioned in the tweet. Originally, Twitter was supposed to start making this feature available to all users a few days ago, but that information turned out to be wrong. The feature finally went live today. So if you want to use it, don't hesitate to update Twitter. Note, however, that the feature may be rolling out to users gradually. If you don't see the option to set who can reply even after updating the app, don't panic and stay patient.

Belarus shut down the internet

If you follow events in the world with at least one eye, then you certainly did not miss the large-scale protests in Belarus, which have been taking place here since Sunday evening. Citizens are having problems with the election process and it looks like the vote is supposed to be rigged. This was stated by the opposition candidate Cichanouská, who refused to recognize the victory of the current president Alexander Lukashenko in the next election. The Belarusian regime had to intervene in a certain way against the spread of this claim, so it has been blocking access to sites such as Facebook, YouTube or Instagram for several tens of hours, and at the same time chat applications such as WhatsApp, Messenger or Viber are being blocked. Perhaps the only social network that works is Telegram. However, according to Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, the Internet connection itself in Belarus is very unstable, so citizens have problems with overall access to the Internet. It is ruled out that this was a coincidence, which was confirmed by several sources. The government of Belarus states that the internet is down there due to widespread attacks from abroad, which various sources have denied. Controlled regulation is therefore more or less clear in this case, and falsification of election results can also be considered true according to these steps. We will see how the whole situation continues to develop.
