OS X Yosemite brought some of the biggest changes to the California company's desktop system in years. The most perceived aspect is the user interface. This is now done in a simpler and lighter design. Of course, the change affected the Safari web browser, which was updated to its eighth version. Let's show you its basic options that will help you customize the look and feel of the browser to your liking.

How to view the full address

Following iOS, the full address is no longer displayed in the address bar, which can be a bit confusing when you first launch Safari. Instead of jablickar.cz/bazar/ you will only see jablickar.cz. Once you click into the address bar, the full address will be displayed.

For many, this is about making the Safari interface clearer and simpler. But then there is a group of users who need the full address for their work, and hiding it is counterproductive for them. Apple has not forgotten about these users. To view the full address, just go to Safari settings (⌘,) and in the tab Advanced check the option Show full site addresses.

How to display the page title

You are in a situation where you have only one panel open and you need to find out the name of the page that was displayed above the address bar in earlier versions. You can open a new panel to display the title of the page in the panel. However, this is a rigid solution. Safari allows you to display a row of panels even with a single panel open. From the menu Display select an option Show a row of panels or use a shortcut ⇧⌘T. Or click the button Show all panels (two squares in the upper right).

How to view panels as previews

Click on the mentioned button with two squares and that's it. Now you might be wondering if it's scratching with your right hand on your left ear when you have to do an extra push-up. With a few panels open, the preview doesn't make much sense, but with ten or more, it can. The previews are mainly used for faster orientation in the confusion of panels. Both thumbnails of open pages and their names above each preview help with this.

How to move an application window

Such a mundane thing as grabbing a window and moving it can be more difficult with Safari 8. The header with the name of the page as such has disappeared and there is nothing else to do but use the area around the icons and the address bar. It may happen that you will have more icons and there will be almost nowhere to click. Fortunately, Safari allows you to add a flexible gap between them. Right-click on the address bar and icons and select an option Edit Toolbar… You can then use the mouse to arrange the individual elements and possibly add a flexible gap that will ensure a sufficient amount of free space.

How to display the Favorite Pages panel

Although at first glance it looks as if Apple is trying to hide Safari's functionality, it actually adds some. Similar to iOS, it is displayed after opening a new panel (⌘T) or new windows (⌘N) to display favorite items. To do this, you must have a tab in the Safari settings In general for items Open in a new window: a Open in a new panel: selected option Favourite. A reduced version also appears after clicking in the address bar (⌘L).

How to display a row of favorite pages

Apple tried to fit as many functions as possible into the new address bar. After clicking into it, as described in the previous paragraph, you can immediately see your favorite and most frequently visited pages. However, if for whatever reason you want your favorites bar back, there's no easier way than from the menu Display select Show a row of favorite pages or press ⇧⌘B.

How to choose a default search engine

The option to choose the default search engine was also available in previous versions of Safari, but it does not hurt to remember it. The default search engine is Google, but Yahoo, Bing and DuckDuckGo are also available. To change, go to browser settings and where in the tab Search select one of the mentioned search engines.

How to open an incognito window

Until now, anonymous browsing in Safari has been handled in an "either-or" style. This means that all windows went into incognito mode when incognito browsing was turned on. It was not possible to have one window in normal mode and the other in incognito mode. Just from the menu File select New incognito window or use a shortcut ⇧⌘N. You can recognize an anonymous window by the dark address bar.
