OS X Mavericks has been freely available to Mac users for over a month, and in that short time it has managed to overtake all other versions of OS X, which of course has a big part to do with the fact that it is offered completely free, unlike the other versions that Apple sold in $20-$50 range. According to Netmarketshare.com Mavericks has gained 2,42% of the world's desktop operating system market share over the past five weeks, a meteoric rise that no OS X before it has achieved.

During November alone, OS X 10.9 gained 1,58 percentage points, while shares of other Mac operating systems declined. Mountain Lion fell the most by 1,48%, followed by OS X 10.7 Lion (by 0,22% to 1,34 percent overall) and OS X 10.6 (by 0,01% to 0,32 percent overall). The current state of shares also means that 56% of all Macs are running an operating system that is no more than 2,5 years old (OS X 10.8 + 10.9), which certainly cannot be said by Microsoft, whose second most widespread operating system is still Windows XP.

Microsoft continues to hold the majority share, at 90,88 percent worldwide. Windows 7 accounts for most of this (46,64%), with XP still safely holding second place (31,22%). The new Windows 8.1 has already surpassed the latest OS X 10.9 with 2,64 percent, but the two latest versions of Windows 8, which are supposed to represent the future of Microsoft and have been on the market for more than a year, did not even reach 9,3 percent.

The overall share of OS X is slowly growing at the expense of Windows, currently according to Netmarketshare 7,56%, while three years ago the market share was slightly above the five percent mark. In three years, this means an almost 50% increase, and the trend is still growing. It should be noted that in the home country of America the share is double. Despite the general decline of the PC segment, Macs are still doing well, after all Apple is the most profitable computer manufacturer in the world, he owns 45% of all sales profits.
