The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is approaching, where, among other things, Windows Mobile 7 will be presented (Windows Mobile 7 without Flash and multitasking). And in addition, there is also an interesting novelty for iPhone users. Opera is about to introduce its Internet browser Opera Mini for the iPhone.
Opera Mini is known for using web page compression and this results in faster loading times and also saves users a large percentage of transferred megabytes. There should also be panels, Speed Dial functions and a password manager.
I was surprised by this news, because I wouldn't expect Apple to allow another browser on the iPhone, and on the other hand, I don't expect Opera Mini to use the WebKit core that's currently used on the iPhone.
So let's be surprised what plans Opera will reveal this Monday..

Well, it certainly won't run in the background like Safari does, so pretty much any alternative browser from the AppStore is useless to me.

Otherwise, it's stupid that it erases the user's data, isn't it? Would the server where the website is to be displayed also have to support compression? In my opinion, it just uses a general technique of first displaying the text, the image blurred, and then fills in the rest or something similar?

It's not stupid.. it removes some unnecessary things from the code + it compresses the images.. I mean it runs through the Opera servers or something like that..
It's not bullshit. Opera mini works through Opera proxy servers. Your page request goes to them, their servers download it, parse it, compress it, and then send it to your browser on your phone.
