If you are one of the people who have prepaid unlimited data, then this article is probably not for you. Well, if you belong to the second part that has a data limit, so Onavo could help you save up to 80% data.
As I mentioned in the introduction, Onavo is a data saving app. It installs a system profile on the iPhone, which is activated as soon as you start using data via the operator's network. During WiFi transmissions, Onavo automatically deactivates the profile and sets the original profile.
The following video will give you a simple overview of how the application works:
Of course, you will pay a tax for the saved data in the form of compressed images and other compressed files, but this will not affect the speed by any rapid slowdown. A big plus is the display of statistics, which divides the data into several categories, such as Web, Mail, SpringBoard and others. After my testing, I can only confirm that it works, and according to statistics, I saved up to 63% of data, with the Web being the leader, of course.
So if you are forced to monitor every megabyte, Onavo could help you. It's definitely worth a try since it's free on the App Store.

I wonder how it erases the data. It's just that it compresses photos and so on. ??
And if I want to find a photo in good quality? Doesn't it compress too much? Is it recognizable? Otherwise it sounds great! :)
Too bad it doesn't work on 3.1.3 :( maybe the next update will solve it.
So I tried it and deleted it again. The program is probably good. It really saves data when browsing the Internet, when downloading email, when loading data from other applications (novinky.cz, ČT24), etc.
But it slows down all data loading from the internet quite a bit. Photos in Safari are then cubed. Within half an hour of use, I also received an error message.
It kind of bothered me more than it helped.
Try it and see for yourself if it suits you or not.
I tried it and it didn't work very well, it didn't show me the Turn Savings On button option...even though I did everything according to the video..(tested on 4.2.1 on 3G)
I wish the others better luck…
Does the app have to run in the background?
I haven't tried that. That app adds the profile directly to settings/general. So I don't think it needs to run in the background. But I'm not responsible for it :)
I haven't tried it, but I think it's really crazy, which takes up a lot of the processor. It's a fact that I have internet on my mobile without fup, so I look at it completely differently...
It doesn't take up much of the processor, but all the data you download first goes to the Onavo server, gets compressed there, and only gets to you from there.
Hence the slowdown. At least that's how I understood it.
and isn't it easier to use opera mini, which apparently does basically the same thing (data compression via its own servers)?
I also think it will be like that.
Thanks, I'll try
But Onavo does it for everything. For emails and most applications that connect to the net. Not just in the browser. For example, with ČT24 it said 37% data save, with novinky.cz 25% and in Safari 60%. He can't do it only for video and VOIP.
Like I said, it works, but I won't be using it. The loading slowdown is noticeable.
Too bad I didn't try it with opera :)
so I tried it and it's not that bad... according to statistics, it can also save data from maps and, for example, from the appstore (apparently images when loading information about applications, etc.)... so, although slower, it saves data... quite a good choice for going abroad and when one exceeds the FUP so too :)
That's right, when few developers think about saving and optimizing transfers as well as optimizing images, reducing the size of images does not have to result in a reduction in quality at all costs. I also didn't pay attention to it before, but now when I activated data compression on the website, when all text is compressed with approx. 70-80% compression and reduced the size of images to approx. 10th of the original size (or less), my website now loads at an average speed of 0,6 .1,2 – 20 seconds, which is great compared to some websites that take 5 seconds to load, etc. the main benefit is offline storage in HTMLXNUMX, the visitor comes to the website, I save all the images to his PC and he is already running as if he were turning the pages in a book and everything jumps out in an instant. Well, it also doesn't eat much data like in the video. I would just like to know how ONAVO compresses the data outside the device before the actual download, unless it all goes through some ONAVO proxy where one of their servers compresses the data and sends it to the device already reduced. It is definitely a very interesting application and I think that for someone who really needs to check how much data is flowing through his iPhone or who simply wants to save some data, this application is really great.
