One of the last products in which he was intensively involved leaving Apple's chief designer, Jony Ive, was the Apple Watch. Ive reportedly put a lot of pressure on Apple in this matter, even though some of the management did not agree with the development of the watch. Ive participated in daily meetings with the responsible team, but after the release of the Apple Watch, he began to distance himself from the company, hindering the process and even skipping meetings, which greatly frustrated the team.

Ive had a lot going on at Apple. When he was promoted to chief designer in 2015, it was originally supposed to relieve him of at least some of his day-to-day duties. The new leadership of Alan Dye and Richard Howarth did not gain the necessary respect from the design team, and its members still preferred command and approval from Ive.

However, his involvement in the running of the company and the team lost intensity after the release of the Apple Watch. It is said that he sometimes came to work several hours late, sometimes did not show up for meetings, and the monthly "design weeks" often had to do without his participation.

As the development of the iPhone X was gaining momentum, the team presented a number of features of the upcoming smartphone to Ive and asked him to approve them. It was, for example, gesture control or switching from the locked screen to the desktop. There was a lot of pressure to get all the features done because there were concerns about the iPhone X being launched on time. But Ive didn't provide the team with the leadership or guidance they needed.

When Ive returned to his original day-to-day duties in 2017 at the request of Tim Cook, some cheered that he was "Jony back." The Wall Street Journal however he remarked, that this state did not last very long. In addition, Ive often had to travel to his native England, where he visited his ailing father.

While the above might seem like everyone at Apple had anticipated his departure in some way, it looks like the design team didn't actually know about him until the very last minute. Ive himself had only told them last Thursday, and he had been patiently answering everyone's questions.

Although Apple will be the most important client of his newly founded company LoveForm, the foundations of the design team have also been shaken, causing many people to doubt the future of Apple product design. The newly appointed leadership of the design team will report to Jeff Williams, not Tim Cook.

So Jony Ive's departure from Apple was apparently gradual and inevitable. So far, no one dares to predict what Ive's new company's cooperation with Apple will look like - we can only be surprised.
