An integral part of all generations of Apple TV are controllers. Apple is constantly developing these accessories, taking into account not only the latest trends and technologies, but also user requests and feedback. In today's article, we will recall all the remote controls that Apple has ever produced. And not just those for Apple TV.

First generation Apple Remote (2005)

The first remote control from Apple was quite simple. It was rectangular in shape and made of white plastic with a black top. It was an inexpensive, compact remote control that was used to control media or presentations on a Mac. It featured an infrared sensor and an integrated magnet that allowed it to be attached to the side of a Mac. In addition to the Mac, it was also possible to control an iPod with the help of this controller, but the condition was that the iPod was placed in a dock with an infrared sensor. The first generation Apple Remote was also used to control the first generation Apple TV.

Second generation Apple Remote (2009)

With the arrival of the second generation of the Apple Remote, there were significant changes in terms of design and functions. The new controller was lighter, longer and slimmer, and the original bright plastic was replaced by sleek aluminum. The second-generation Apple Remote was also equipped with black plastic buttons - a circular directional button, a button to return to the home screen, volume and playback buttons, or perhaps a button to mute the sound. There was space on the back of the controller to accommodate a round CR2032 battery, and in addition to an infrared port, this controller also featured Bluetooth connectivity. This model could be used to control the second and third generation Apple TV.

First generation Siri Remote (2015)

When Apple released the fourth generation of its Apple TV, it also decided to adapt the corresponding remote control to its functions and user interface, which was now more focused on applications. There was not only a change in the name of the controller, which in some regions offered support for the Siri voice assistant, but also a change in its design. Here, Apple completely got rid of the circular control button and replaced it with a control surface. Users could control applications, the user interface of the tvOS operating system or even games using simple gestures and clicking on the mentioned desktop. The Siri Remote was also equipped with traditional buttons for returning home, volume control or perhaps activating Siri, and Apple also added a microphone to it. The Siri Remote could be charged using a Lightning cable, and for controlling games, this controller was also equipped with motion sensors.

Siri Remote (2017)

Two years after the release of the fourth-generation Apple TV, Apple came up with the new Apple TV 4K, which also included an improved Siri Remote. It wasn't a completely new generation of the previous version, but Apple made some design changes here. The Menu button has received a white ring around its perimeter, and Apple has also improved the motion sensors here for even better gaming experiences.

Second Generation Siri Remote (2021)

This April, Apple introduced a new version of its Apple TV, equipped with a completely new Apple TV Remote. This controller borrows a few design elements from controllers of previous generations – for example, the control wheel has returned, which now also has the option of touch control. Aluminum came to the fore again as the predominant material, and there is also a button to activate the Siri voice assistant. The Apple TV Remote offers Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, again charging through the Lightning port, but compared to the previous generation, it lacks motion sensors, which means that this model cannot be used for gaming.
