Yesterday, Samsung introduced its new flagship, the Galaxy S III, with which it will try to compete with other smartphones, especially the iPhone. Even with the new model, Samsung was not shy about copying Apple, especially in software.

The phone itself does not deviate from the series in terms of specifications, even if it is probably the largest phone on the market in terms of diagonal, if we do not count the Samsung Galaxy Note. 4,8”. Super AMOLED with a resolution of 720 x 1280 is the new standard of the Korean company. Otherwise, in the body we find a quad-core processor with a frequency of 1,4 GHz (however, most Android applications cannot use them effectively), 1 GB of RAM and an 8 megapixel camera. In terms of appearance, the S III resembles the first Samsung Galaxy S model. So there is no innovation in the design, and it seems that, unlike, for example, Nokia (see Lumia 900), Samsung is unable to come up with a new original design that would attract attention.

However, it is not the phone itself that makes us mention it at all, nor the theoretical possibility that it could be an iPhone "killer". Samsung is already famous for being a significant inspiration to Apple, especially in terms of hardware. This time, however, he started copying the software, with three functions in particular directly striking and calling for a lawsuit from Apple. The features mentioned below are part of the new version of the Nature UX graphics framework, formerly TouchWiz. Samsung is said to have been inspired by nature, and when the phone is turned on, for example, you will be greeted with the sound of running water, which is more reminiscent of someone defecating.

S Voice

It is a voice assistant that can do a lot of things for you using commands without having to interact with the display. There's no need to just use preset phrases, S Voice should be able to understand the spoken word, recognize the context from it, and then do what you actually want. For example, it can stop the alarm, play songs, send SMS and e-mails, write events in the calendar or find out the weather. S Voice is available in six world languages – English (UK and US), German, French, Spanish, Italian and Korean.

Of course, you immediately think of the similarity with the voice assistant Siri, which is the main draw of the iPhone 4S. It is evident that Samsung wants to feed off of Siri's success and has gone so far as to largely copy the graphical interface, including the main icon for activation. It's hard to say how S Voice will stand up against Apple's solution in terms of functionality, but it's obvious where Samsung drew from.

All Share Cast

With the new Galasy S III, Samsung also introduced various AllShare sharing options, including Cast. This is phone image mirroring via a wireless Wi-Fi network. The image is transmitted in a ratio of 1:1, in the case of video it is then expanded to the entire screen. The transmission is provided by a protocol called Wi-Fi Display, and the image is transmitted to the TV using a device that must be purchased separately. It's a small dongle that fits in the palm of your hand and outputs up to 1080p.

The whole thing is reminiscent of AirPlay Mirroring and Apple TV, which is an intermediary between an iOS device and a television. It is thanks to AirPlay Mirroring that Apple's television is becoming more and more popular, and Samsung obviously did not want to be left behind and offered a similar function with a similar device.

MusicHub

To existing service MusicHub Samsung threw in a feature Scan & Match. It will scan your chosen location on the disk and make the songs that match the collection on Music Hub with about seventeen million songs available from the cloud. Smart Hub is not only for new phone, but also for Smart TV, Galaxy Tablet and other newer devices from Samsung. The service costs $9,99 per month for access from one device or $12,99 for up to four devices.

There's a clear parallel here with iTunes Match, which was introduced last year at the launch of iCloud during WWDC 2011. However, iTunes Match can work with songs it doesn't find in its database, it costs "only" $24,99 a year. You can access the service from any device linked to an iTunes account on which iTunes Match is activated.

Of course, the Samsung Galaxy S III also contains other interesting functions that were not copied from Apple, and some of them certainly have potential. For example, the one where the phone recognizes by your eyes if you are reading something on the display and if so, it will not turn off the backlight. However, the presentation during which the new Galaxy S was introduced was rather a boring charade, where individual participants on stage tried to show as many functions as possible at once. Not even the London Symphony Orchestra, which musically accompanied the entire event, saved it. Even the first ad, which makes the phone a kind of big brother that watches your every step, does not have a particularly positive effect.

It will be interesting to see how the 8,6 mm thin phone with a 4,8” screen will hold up in a direct fight with the iPhone, especially with this year's model, which will probably be presented in early autumn.
