Year after year, Apple has brought us the next generation of its desktop operating system, which this year was named macOS Catalina. There is a whole range of news, while the most interesting ones include the new Apple Music, Apple Podcast and Apple TV applications replacing iTunes, support for the iPad as an external display, and support for universal applications that can be easily ported from iOS.

News in macOS 10.15

  • iTunes is ending, replaced by Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV.
  • Synchronization with iOS devices now takes place through the sidebar in the Finder.
  • macOS 10.15 brings support for 4K HDR to Macs through the Apple TV application, there is also support for Doble Vision and Dolby Atmos.
  • The iPad can be used as an external display for your Mac, even wirelessly. Apple Pencil will also be supported.
  • macOS Catalina brings the new Findy My application, which shows the location of friends and own devices, which may be offline.
  • The new Activation Lock feature (from iOS) – available on Macs with the T2 chip – will make it impossible to use your Mac if it's stolen.
  • The Photos, Safari, Notes, and Reminders apps offer a redesigned interface.
  • The system gets Screen Time (just like iOS).
  • Project Catalyst introduces common apps for iOS/iPadOS/macOS. It is now also available for developers.
