At the end of last year, we wrote about the Luna Display application, which can duplicate or expand the desktop of the source device using its own hardware. At that time, it was about extending the display from macOS to the new iPad Pros. Many users were interested in this feature, but the problem was the need to purchase dedicated hardware and software. This could change in the future, as Apple is planning a very similar function in the upcoming version of macOS 10.15.

The foreign website 9to5mac has obtained more "insider" information about the upcoming major update macOS 10.15. One of the big news should be a feature that will make it possible to extend the virtual desktop of macOS devices to other displays, especially iPads. That is exactly what Luna Display does. At the moment, this novelty has the name "Sidecar", but it is more like an internal designation.

According to the sources of the foreign editorial office 9to5mac, a function should appear in the new version of macOS that will allow the entire window of the selected application to be displayed on the connected external display. It can be either a classic monitor or a connected iPad. The Mac user will thus get additional space on the virtual desktop on which to work.

The new function will be available in the green button of the selected window, which now works to select full-screen mode. When the user holds the cursor over this button for a longer time, a new context menu appears, offering to display the window on the selected external display.

Owners of new iPads will also be able to use this innovation in combination with the Apple Pencil. This will be a way to get the Apple Pencil functionality into the Mac environment. Until now, there were only dedicated graphics tablets for similar needs, for example from Wacom. We will learn more about what's new in macOS 10.15 in about two months, at the WWDC conference.
