One of the main attractions of the new operating system iOS 11 is the support of applications that use augmented reality. This news has been quite busy in recent months. And that's especially because it's an element that Apple is really trying to push among users. Tim Cook comments on AR almost everywhere he goes. For now, the entire technology is relatively in its infancy, but over time, more and more interesting and sophisticated applications should appear. As far as popularity of use is concerned, in the case of AR applications, games rule so far.

If we look at all available AR applications in the App Store, 35% of them are games. Practical applications follow (where ARKit is used, for example, for various measurements, projections, etc.). 11% of ARKit applications are focused on entertainment and multimedia, 7% are educational, 6% focus on photos and video and 5% belong to the Lifestyle segment (where, for example, the very popular IKEA Place AR application is located, which is still not available in the Czech Republic ).

If we look at the ranking of the highest grossing AR applications, games occupy four of the top five places. Games in general accounted for roughly 53% of all AR app downloads and generated 63% of total revenue from the entire AR App segment. The popularity of AR games was expected considering that these are the very games that were among the most popular applications before. However, the level of popularity of measurement tools such as AR MeasureKit is interesting. Users often praise these applications and are surprised by how well they work in practice. It is probably only a matter of time before AR applications become even more popular and users (and at the same time developers) discover the potential hidden in them.
