Apple Maps has been one of the weakest links of iOS for a long time, which was greatly helped by the fiasco that accompanied their launch in 2012. Apple is therefore constantly trying to improve its maps, and we should expect the biggest changes soon in iOS 12. TechCrunch in fact, he described in his extensive article that Apple Maps will receive new map data and will thus be significantly more detailed.

Apple's main goal is to make its maps completely independent and free them from data dependence from third-party providers. That's why the company creates its own map materials that collect special cars that were seen not only in the USA, but also in several European countries. The implementation of the accumulated data itself is complicated, so the first changes will only affect San Francisco and the Bay Area in the next beta version of iOS 12. Later in the year, users will see an expansion to Northern California.

Own map data brings several benefits to Apple. Primarily, it will be able to deal with road changes much faster, sometimes even in real time. In this way, end users will have up-to-date maps with all the pitfalls they may encounter on their travels. Apple will be able to immediately deal with possible errors in the maps and will not have to rely on corrections from its providers.

Eddy Cue, who is in charge of Apple Maps, said that Apple Maps will be the best map application in the world, which was greatly helped by building the map base from the ground up using special cars and data from users' iPhones. But Cue noted that Apple always collects data anonymously and only a subsection of the whole - never the whole way from point A to point B, but only randomly selected segments of it.

The new version of Apple Maps will bring several changes and improvements. For example, additional information will be added for pedestrians, sports areas (baseball and basketball courts), parking lots, trees, markers for grass, building shapes and sizes, and road networks will be improved. This should make the map more like the real world. The search will also see an improvement, which should return more relevant results. Navigation, especially for pedestrians, will also undergo a change.
